According to the Airline Route News blog (http://airlineroute.blogspot.com/), the JFK-ICN flight will operate 7 days a week (no, really, this time they mean it) with 777 a/c beginning on Mar 30 '09. The ORD-ICN route will change to 777 service beginning on Nov 29 '08, though there's no mention of any change in frequency (currently 3x/week).

Wow...I've got a ticket in F for ORD-ICN-ORD next July '09. I see that the 777 will be 3 class. I hope the flying experience will be as nice as the 747. Any idea what the best seat is on the 777 in F?

Can't guarantee the Daily JFK for now because they postponed it twice already this year.
Also the new flights operated by 777 is not yet on sale.

I have an F ticket for early April. I was looking forward to riding way up front on the 747, but I'll be equally happy on a 777. If they stick to the March 30 date, I'll get the 777. If the schedule slips a bit, I could still get the 747.
Thanks for the link to the route updates, wideman!

The F cabin will be 1-2-1. I obviously haven't flown in OZ's configuration. However, in similarly-shaped F cabins on NH, LH, and LX, the window seats are best if you're traveling solo, and the two center seats best if traveling as a couple. I've never seen a big difference between rows 1 & 2 (I usually prefer row 2, coz the cabin appears roomier from there, but the difference is infinitesimal). I will choose left side or right side based on where the sun will be at various times of the flight (trying to keep it out of my eyes if window shade is open).

Checking the time table 11/30/08 ORD-ICN is still showing 747, even on the star alliance website. The website that you mentioned also said 3 class 777 also goes to HKG, but I found 74M instead. Is that source reliable ? Where is the 3 class 777 comes from ?

1) OZ doesn't operate ORD-ICN on 30NOV08
2) OZ inventory is definitely displaying new 3-class configuration 777 on ICN-ORD route
3) the same aircraft operates to HKG on Friday only on OZ721/722
Just checked the Amadeus inventories by logging on to my office computer, since I posted those information on the site.;)

I called Asiana today and was told that the ORD-ICN flight next July has indeed been changed from a 747 to a 777.
The seating configuration in F is two rows of 2-2.
This seems weird on a 777. Does anyone have any details on this. This looks like really bad news for the solo traveler as there are no single seats.

I doubt they know what they're saying either, since they have not been on this aircraft. No airline would be stupid enough to do 2-2 on a 777.

Aside from the stupidity factor, it wouldn't be practical to have a single aisle when the 777 is designed for double aisles throughout the entire aircraft.

Yeah, that's more like it. No one in the right might would turn a 777 into a one aisle plane. They would need to re-test evacuation procedures IMHO and it would be extremely impractical.

No, they told me 2-2.
I am concerned about this, because acording to the Airline Route News blog http://airlineroute.blogspot.com/2008/11/asiana-new-777-200-cabin-configuration.html
ASIANA is introducing new Boeing 777-200ER configuration. As previous post (777 to Chicago) mentioned, the new 777 is in 3-class configuration.
Configuration and layout are the following:
77C/773 F8 C28 Y226
77C - long-haul flights
773 - regional flights
First Class
Row 1-2
Layout 4 across, 1-2-1 or 2-2
COT Ahead of Row 1
Business Class
Row 5-6 , 7-8
Layout AC-DEG-HK
Notes
•Lavatories is behind Row 6
•Galley is between Row 6-7
•The Emergency exit is assumed to be between Row 6-7
•Lavatories & Galleys in between Row 24/25
•Lavatories also behind Row 37
•COT Section is at the middle-3 between Row 28/29

When I was putting these details down from Amadeus' seat map display, it's pretty hard to determine if it's 1-2-1 or 2-2, that's why I had to put both guesses down which I don't usually do.

Even the call centre agents are all likely to be just looking at the CRS seatmap. None of them would know for sure. I'm still 99% sure it will be 1-2-1.

Has anyone ever seen a widebody aircraft with the cockpit at the front of the main deck that goes from two aisles to one, just for F class? If these things are configured 2-2, I'll eat my hat :)

What they could do is put the crew rest area and galley along one side of the first class section. There would still be two aisles, but the two seats in the middle would be both aisle seats.
KLM did this on some of their older 747s on the main deck in the section just behind the nose.
I can't imagine Asiana doing this though.

Doesn't Asiana use normal business class seats as crew rest on their 777s?

Hi - Will the number of 744 in OZ fleet be reduced from 5 to 4 (2 full pax + 2 mixed) with the introduction of 777 service to ORD 29/11 ? or will the "dark horse" (none upgrade 74M) still be flying short haul intra Asia, and make replacement runs to LAX and JFK. I am flying LAX-ICN early December (C-class) - and will avoid seat lottery with 74M - and chance to 777 if any risk - or use the other Korean carrier ;-)
Checking OZ timetable is not easy as the number of scheduled full pax flights are impossible with only 2 aircrafts, but however, it seems possible to do all scheduled 744 flights with just 4 aircrafts. Any idea what`s the fact, thanks.

Generally OZ203/204 gets the 777 on ICN-LAX, but it's the 2-class.

I appreciate any feed-back, but my actual question has still not been commented. OZ are operating two 744 (full pax) with identical upgraded seat confirguration, and three 74M (mixed) of which only two are with upgraded seat configuration (similar to upperdeck of full pax version) and one with old style seat arrangement, as indicated on Asiana US homepage.
Is the none upgraded 74M still flying in OZ fleet after introduction of new 3-class 777 and latest changes in schedule taken place Ultimo Nov / Primo Dec, thanks.

Within my knowledge, Asiana uses the following codes for fleet schedules in Asiana homepage.
747: 747 refurbished pax/combi
( It's somewhat strange. However, Asiana uses this code to distinguish refurb from non-refurb. Ex) ORD - ICN )
74M: 747 non-refurbished combi
During this period (Ultimo Nov / Primo Dec), OZ schedule shows that OZ will operate 747 refurbished fleets or 777 for OZ201/202 except Nov 19 (Wed)/26 (Wed).
For accuracy, you may inquire of Asiana reservation desk before ticketing.

Thanks Mike,
Thats also explains why nearly all US flights are listed as 747 flights in Asiana homepage i.e. it covers both 744 versions. It`s quite strange that Asiana use a different codes for intra asia flights, where 74E and 747 are codes used for 744 flights instead of 747/74M.
