Hi - I'm trying to find out if the LAX>ICN 747 has the newest OZ seats in F. Any info will be appreciated. First time on OZ so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks.
PS: I'll be in ICN one night (arr. 1830) and wonder if it's worth going into Seoul for a look around or if that will be too much trouble. My flight the next day is at 0900.

FT has a handy search feature which would bring up this thread for example:
Regarding a trip to Seoul: It is a good 1.5 hours from the airport to the city each way and it might take quite some time to immigration as well. Cost is W14,000 using the KAL shuttle bus.
So if you land at 1830 you will not be in town before 2100. Not worth it IMHO unless you have friends in Seoul who can take you to some cool clubs to party the night away.

Thanks very much for the info. What did you enter into the search box to get this info? Any recommendations on at hotel at ICN?
The best hotel at ICN is the Hyatt. Very nice and close to the airport.

Mostly new F, but there are some specific days late Nov/early Dec when old config'ed 747 runs on ICN-LAX-ICN. If you're flying later than this period, you'll be okay, but if within this season, please PM me with your flight date.

Hi - This will be in mid-Jan 2009, so I'm hoping that will be okay. Pre-departure, the TBIT *A lounge is what should be used, I'm guessing. From ICN, I'm going on to SIN, so can I use the OZ F lounge in ICN? Thanks a lot.

You'll be able to use TBIT lounge, but your class (flying class or ticketing class, I'm not sure) of ICN-SIN flight will determine which lounge you can use in ICN.

The OP stated he was on the 0900 flight out of ICN, so that would most likely be in F on SQ's 3-class 773.
Yes, he will be allowed into the OZ F lounge.

I thought there is only one old 747 left and this is not used long haul anymore? Does this one also has the old C seats?

Travelling to Korea early December, and had actually decided in favour of Asiana C-class, but this information makes me consider once again, as it is inconsistent with other treads where both full pax and 2 out of 3 74M are equipped with updated seats and used daily on LAX and the remaining 74M not updated will only run short haul in Asia, but according to this message will it now be used on ICN-LAX-ICN for a limited period. Any further information or update, thanks.

I am on ICN-LAX in July 2009 and my OLCI seatmap said: old F class!
Is that really true?

Just off from ICN-LAX (OZ202, 11/19 Wednesday).
The on-line seat selection page showed the old 747-combi map which turned out to be the actual aircraft at the gate -- with almost an hour delay to boot. My boarding pass already showed boarding time with 30-minute delay when I checked in 3 hours earlier.
I was in 20J (bulkhead middle-seat just behind the First-class cabin) so couldn't see C but F looked quite old with 3 rows with 2 seats on either side. Y was disappointingly old. No AVOD, not even PTV but just plain old overhead projection screen on the bulkhead. Good thing the amenity kit had an eye mask, no way I could sleep without it.
Never realized the bulkhead seats would be so narrow -- should have taken the exit row middle seat when the check-in agent offered it.
20H talked with an FA regarding seats for some time after take-off and chose an unoccupied plain middle-seat somewhere around row 24. When I took his seat I understood why he wanted to go back. It was CRAMPED! Must have been at least an inch narrower than my 20J which was already narrower than other seats.
Overall a miserable experience. The crew service was friendly and courteous as always but they managed to run out of my selection for the breakfast when they served from the back row first. I and my seatmate chose the same plate but they had only one left. BTW my seatmate was an old lady, guess who got the choice? 20F and 20G didn't even have any choice. -_-; I thought such thing only happened on United! :p
Note to self: Don't take a bulkhead seat unless you really have to!!!
This was easily the worst experience with OZ to date and hopefully will be for at least a few years to come.

Sorry for your experience. OZ should remove the dark 74M as soon as possible! But cargo market is going down much faster than passenger's, OZ seems deferring its plan.
I experienced similar thing early this week on ICN-SFO - 2nd meal comes from behind, so I also lost my choice. I insisted Korean meal because "Spinach omelet" sounds terrible. But since Korean choice was gone, they offered C class meal which wasn't Korean either. It must be better than spinach stuff, although not what I wanted.

Yes, it was that spinach omelette (quiche or something like that) and I assure you that you made a great choice since it actually tasted worse than it sounded. :td: Guess I should sharpen up my smooth-talking skill so that I can score a C-class meal when I come across similar circumstances. :D Worst part was that I had opted for the western meal, a steak, for dinner as I had bibimbap many times before. It was decent but considering the fiasco at the breakfast... ooooo...
While waiting at the gate, I got curious about the 74M placement and went through flightstat.com history. I went back up to early November but could see no other 74M placement, only 747(pax)s and 777s turned up. So I guess it would be wise to keep an eye out and avoid 74M on ICN-US long haul (and vice versa?). I knew it was going to be 74M a week before when I changed my return date, but didn't think much of it -- now I know better.
P.S.> For reference, the registration number was HL7417.

Usually, in the middle of a month, Asiana updates detailed schedule for the next month. Yours must have changed to 74M late Oct or early Nov. Currently all schedule for Jan 09 or after are 747 and 777, but some of them can be changed to 74M. It surely will be confirmed after the point you cannot change travel date without paying 100~150 dollars fee.
The way I could avoid spinach damn stuff was like this. I kindly told to the cabin crew that after I deplane, I cannot eat any decent Korean meal for the next six months because I'm living in a small city where Korean markets are far away and I don't have a car, which are partly true and partly lying. :)

Hrm. I'm on this flight LAX-ICN on Jan 5th using miles for C. I looked on the website but it doesn't seem to show crombi vs 747 searching flights normally. Is there some way to check whether or not this is the old config?

Try looking at the weekly schedule on the website. Put the correct date (i.e. Jan 5th) and it will show you which aircraft will fly the route. 747 means pax and 74M means combi.
Also, if you can do online seat selection, it will show the aircraft type as well.

Shows 747 for all flights for that week. Good sign, i hope. I was seriously considering trying to find another way to BKK, though there aren't that many options this late in the game aka. any

Just recently I learned that OZ uses 747 for new configuration either Pax or Combi. The OZ term 74M means old configuration on Combi. Travelling Jan 09 should be OK.

Not really. Jan 09 is simply not updated yet - just showing original plan. It will be confirmed at somewhere in the middle of December.

I read somewhere that HL7417 would be converted end of this year, and leave only four (4) all new configuration 747 in OZ fleet, but now it seems they might keep it flying even on scheduled US flights ?? in Jan 09 and onward, which means continued seat lottery on OZ longhaul flights ;-(

HL7417 should have gone few months back. It's just economy - cargo demand is dropping much severely than passenger market. I just hope Asiana does not employ this dark 747 on longhaul anymore.

Be careful, Feb 8th OZ 204 was HL7417, I got to the gate and saw we had HL7417 and was extremly disappointed. This was after flying 3 legs in the updated C already, including 2 legs on the 767. This made my last flight on Asiana not living up to what I had already been expierencing.
But it seems like they are still deploying HL7417 on long haul routes

Also want to report this particular 74M is falling apart in the C seats other than not working PTV. I was supposed to be seated at 11A exit, then FA said 12AB is open, so I took 12A in order to get the seat next to me empty plus floor storage. My bag was slightly over packed, so I stuck under the seat in front, when I took it out, the whole grey hard plastic fell off entirely, it is supposed to cover both seats 11AB. I glanced the seat on the other side 12JK, that plastic part also has cracked, anyone seated at row 11 or 12 beware not to put oversize bag under those seats.

Along with Tin foil covering what I assumed was lights that would not turn off. This plane is mess and its sad that Asiana is actually sending this on 12-10 hour trips. If someone only flew Asiana LAX-ICN on that plane, I would dare say that it would scare them away for ever.
For future reference, I wrote a trip report with many pictures detailing the interior of this beautiful:rolleyes: plane.
