Booked a room at the Palazzo for $119. Figured I would try the $20 (or $50) to see what that gets me. How many stories is the hotel? When I tried that in the Venetian, I got the 31st floor. Isn't the Palazzo 50 stories or something? Looking forward to trying the place out.

I wouldn't count on the $50 trick working. From what I've read, they're up-selling as a way to make up for the low rates.

What are they doing to make up for the lack of business?

They're accruing lots of debt, that's what they're doing. Abysmal performance so far.

Lack of business? Abysmal performance?? You guys must be talking about a different hotel. ;) :p I've been to the Palazzo and Venetian quite a few times over the past couple months and it's consistently been busy - even midweek. I'm not surprised... they have the best standard rooms (excuse me, suites) in the city IMHO, an outstanding restaurant selection (the steak I had recently at Wolfgang Puck's Cut was one of the best I've ever eaten), not to mention all the other amenities one could need.

As for financial performance, we'll see how that looks when they announce earnings on Monday. Wynn beat Q3 expectations this week. ^ That followed news of a debt offer and better results than some feared from MGM that helped the casino sector ROAR back to life. Las Vegas Sands, owner of the Venetian and Palazzo, is recovering handsomely the past few days as news spreads that the reports of the death of Las Vegas have turned out to be greatly exaggerated. Thank goodness. :D

Oh, to the OP, based on the low room rate, I agree with the poster above who said the $20/$50 trick might not work - they're looking for paid upgrades. That said, a smile will probably get you a high floor if it's available, just not a strip view.

Not a lot of data points for the Palazzo but have you check out http://www.frontdesktip.com?

Had to comment on the Wynn performance after reading an article on it. It sounded like it's results primarily beat expectations based on the strength of its Macau operations offsetting the weakness of its Strip operations. I think it said its revenue from its Strip operations has been declining for a number of months.
Who knows if the financial malaise that we're in will eventually turn off the tap in Asia.

I think we have quite a while for a recovery, IMO. All of the big players have take a hugh hit over the past year. I do agree Wynn is in better shape, due to a better debt position than others.

"MGM stock added $3.69 by close Wednesday and tacked on more Thursday, closing at $15.37. But the year's range is startling: a high of $94.10 but a low of $8.91 in the past 12 months."

"Las Vegas Sands stock in the past 12 months registered a high of $135.35, a low of $4.32. It closed up strongly Thursday, gaining $1.47 to reach $10.38."

"Wynn's stock price closed Thursday at $46.50, up $5.50 for the day; the range for the year; however, is a high of $162.75 and a low of $28.06."

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't especially looking for a different room really, just one with a great view. I will give it a try the trick to get a higher floor than normal.

Has anyone who has stayed at the Palazzo know if they have an ipod player or dock in the suites? Just wondering if the stereo that they have in the rooms have connections to play off of your mp3 players. Thanks!

Just wanted to update some things. I have been in Vegas for a couple of days now. At checkin (9pm on Monday), I smiled at the checkin agent and she said that since I was so nice, she would see what she could do for me. She left to talk with her manager and came back to put me in a Sienna suite on the 47th floor. Amazing suite. I celebrated by taking my friend out to dinner at Cut. More on the trip later.

Awesome score, HawaiiTrvlr! ^ Congrats!! Did you use the $20/$50 trick... or just the charming smile trick? If you scored a Sienna suite with a smile, that new trick may need a thread of it's own! ;)

Yes, $40 did help sway her to give me an upgrade. She seemed very appreciative. My friend who was with me was amazed it worked so well.

Some pros and cons about staying at the Palazzo:
Pros
Check in was easy though only 4 check in agents were working
Casino was never crowded (like in the Venetian seemed to be)
Upgrade to the Sienna Suite was incredible (and the view was top notch)
The restaurant Cut was also incredible though very spendy
The Shops were nice, especially Barneys New York though I couldnt bring myself to pay $179 for a shirt (that was the 40% off price)
There was a line at check out (again, only 4 agents) but then a door opened and a flood of new agents came out to help; it went extremely fast after that
Even with the convention at the Sands CC, there was never a line for restaurants (ate at Table 10 last night; recommend the Lobster Pot Pie)

Cons
I self parked and they really need better signage throughout the parking garage and casino
Grand Lux for breakfast on day 2 (just myself) and was told to wait 5 mins but the 2 parties behind me were taken right to their table
Room had a few minor issues; no alarm clock/radio, chips/scratches in the marble, the grout around the tub/shower already peeling, and a broken piece of mirror near the headboard

If I think of any more, I will let you all know. Overall, it was a great stay and look forward to coming back.

also, got incredible prices for my stay $119/$159/$159 = less than $500 for the whole weekend.

never been to palazzo so i'm pretty excited.

oh, we're getting a rental car for 4 days, where should we self park?

I agree w/you on the garage signage-you have no idea where you're going to surface when driving around down there.

I was there 2 weeks ago for my 2nd stay. I had communicated my experiences to the hotel after my stay last spring & have had a very nice young lady taking care of me since. I was given a Bella suite this time around directly overlooking Treasure Island (could hear the music from the show all the way up on the 41st floor!). I'm sorry to say water pressure in the sink & shower was still non-existent, stains around the faucets on the sink, no luggage stand upon arrival (bellman said it was because they keep breaking & housekeeping doesn't do anything about getting them replaced until he calls when delivery luggage). There should have been a sconce on the wall between the 2 beds, but instead there was just a hole where it had been. Also, according to my bellman, the consol table under the tv in the 'bedroom' is supposed to light up (there's a small hole on the side where the switch is; never noticed it before), but ours was broken & bellman said 'most of them are' after he tried to turn it on for us.

It's those kinds of 'little' things that just leave me shaking my head; I expect more from a property that markets itself the way this one does.

I really don't mean to thread-jack, but I think it's safe to say you might be in for a disappointment in the near future.

Why? Lots of businesses operate fine under BK protection. United, Delta, Northwest to name a few...

I'm not even sure that this warrants a reply, but maybe you're not an LVS stockholder... so I'll humor it.

The poster insinuated that the company is "doing great." I hardly think a potential BK situation would encourage most people to place LVS under such a heading. To suggest that there will be any near-term "roaring back" is even further out on the probability scale. Those were my only two points in refuting the poster's suggestion.

Separately, the fact that you've identified a few anecdotal cases where businesses "operate fine" under BK doesn't mean very much. Not only have you perhaps inadvertently chosen a very special case (airlines - an industry long subject to special exception, exemption, and subsidy), but we could certainly go into more detail about the difference between "fine operation" and what most would term a "profitable, sustainable enterprise."

I'll be back at the Palazzo next week on a comp stay (thank you Club Grazie!) as a result of my prior stays/gambling there in January (pre-opening weekend) and July of this year. I love the entire Venetian/Palazzo complex, hands down. The pool complex (in the Summer) is fantastic, especially if you make it into the Tao Beach section.
