As a Gold, do I have a better chance at an upgrade by paying for my stay or getting it on points? I willing to use points for the upgrade.

As a Gold, do I have a better chance at an upgrade by paying for my stay or getting it on points? I willing to use points for the upgrade.
Thoughts?
It doesnt matter. If you want to guarantee an upgrade, use points for the upgrade, and do whatever you feel is personally more feasibile for the room (cash, C+P, points).
Read the master threads of the hotel you are going to, and search the gold upgrade thread to see if golds have had any luck at the hotel you are considering.
Gold is only technically supposed to get an "enhanced room" which can be a better view, higher floor, etc..
If you are looking for a suite, pay for it with money or points. Dont risk it.

I assume you are talking about a suite upgrade and the only way to get that as a gold would be to pay for it just like anyone else or call the hotel and see if they will let you book one with points. You will not be automatically upgraded (unless you get really lucky). Read through the gold upgrade success thread and you will see past members experiences at a variety of hotels. In general as a gold you may get a nice room on a preferred floor, but not a suite.

Other than paying all cash, the hotel and SPG are only offering the chance of an upgrade at 5 days prior to arrival. I cannot use point at reservation.

Then pay all cash. Chances are you wont get an upgrade as a lowly gold.

Both these threads discuss the same thing. kendalh, has pretty much laid it out. If you want to be in a suite, book a suite. Don't rely on the possibility of an upgrade.
