Have you spent Shabbat in Dubai? are there preferred hotels or areas to stay in; is there "anything" to do?

Thanks

I don't think you shouldn't go to DXB due to restrictions with Israeli stamp. They won't let you into DXB due to foreign policy in the Middle Eastern.

Nothing to do there for Shabbat apart from staying in your hotel room which you can't leave unless it has a non electronic key option. Take food with you

You can leave. You just can't come back (at least on Shabbat). :)

why should Dubai be any different then any other place

I always leave my room and never have an actual 'key' except when in Israel or sometimes when on a weekend seminar at certain Hotels.

Simply slip a hard piece of cardboard where the tongue is suppose to slip out and it doesnt. True anyone leaning against the door will open it, but with 1 exception last yr in Berlins Marriott, my door has always remained untouched. * do remember to leave the DND (do not disturb) sign on the door as well. As well lock any and all valuables in the rooms safe or the hotels safe.

BTW this slipping of the card board is what occurs at the vast majority of Passover Hotel programs and there are tons of them

I tried that once in a hotel in Las Vegas and security came over as there was an indication on the system that the door was left open and they wanted to check what was wrong. It was difficult explaining to the rent a cop why I did what I did

that was my problem in Berlin last yr. They came by Fri night for Turn Down (didnt ask for it) and left a Post-It note on the outside of the door (couldnt remove it before Sat night). left for minyan (40 min walk) got back went to the Club for some drinks and then headed back to my room, now there waqs another Post-It about the Morning cleaning (keep in mind I had my Do Not disturb sign out!) Well the door didnt open, so I knew either someone was inside or the cleaning staff was at fault.

Went back up to the Club level where I saw a security guy walking around punching a clock, he didnt speak English but came with me, he called the desk and wanted me to speak on the phone (yea right). then the person who had my room to clean walked by and ended up opening the door but wanted me to show him my ID (its in the safe) in the end he settled for my name tag on my Rollerboard

1st time I ever had that problem, I gues if they spoke English it would have been alot easier or if I wasnt a baseball cap over my kippa, I showed them teh kippa but they still were at a loss

Are you sure ? Last I heard DXB wasn't a problem with an Israeli stamp in a good passport. (I just laid over there in the lounge, didn't actually leave the airport, so I can't say for certain.)

not an issue with a non israeli passport with israeli stamps. wife and i were in dubai last year on us passports with the upwards of 20 ben gurion stamps between the two of us - no problem.

Agreed - not an issue with Israeli visa stamps. I have been there a few times in the past couple of years and never a problem.

One of my friends manages to get them, but he's usually in F class. Not sure whether they'll do it in normal class. Will check - quite a lot of people here in London use them to get to JNB / SHA / BOM / HKG.

Just got back from Dubai.

There is zero availability of kosher food in Dubai.

I went in to the biggest supermarket in Dubai.

This is what I found with a Hashgacha:

Philadelphia Cream Cheese
A generic brand peanut butter
Jelly Belly Jelly Beans.
Ritz Crackers

That's it.

You can also get juices like orange, pineapple, and apple.

But I spent a lot of time in the stores and saw nothing else.

No kosher tuna, sardines, salmon.

No kosher baked beans.

No breads, matzahs, etc.

Either take your own food or starve.

Rumor has it the Organic Grocery store carries Amy's frozen meals but I did not get to verify this.

I ate fruit and cucumbers and tomatoes for the week.

Kosher food in Dubai - no way.
