I disagree with the argument made by the critics here. There nothing that the airline could not do with a little discipline. dFor too long airline tried to copy each other. Each needs to find their unique space in the marketplace and build their strategy around that rather than vice-versa. Nautrally people will go on price when there don't notice a different The problem is there are many airlines that offer same level of service. For example, Want the basics go with Southwest Want a little more go with US Airways and JetBlue. Want premium service go with Continental. As fars amenities levels, customers should not expect the same thing from every airline. Why should I trust the government to fix airlines woes? The government has also been twiddling it thumbs building a more mordern infrastructure to at least alleviate the delays and other serivces problem Knowing the FAA's track record they probably won't even make the 2025 deadline. Airline can only trim capacity which lowers supply and choice. The strictures of the current system does not allow them to adequately meet demand. I do believe airlines should pay their employees well, but politics as shown by the US Airways pilot episode sometimes get in the way. Price controls invite market distortions. Price wars are avoidable too with differentiation and discipline.
