When flying OZ outbound from DEN to ICN, is it better to connect in SFO or LAX? The flight from DEN would be on UA.

On inbound there doesn't appear to be a choice. All connections go through LAX.

Well there are 2 Flights out of LAX... one around mindnight and the other one 12h later around noon. Equipment is either a 777 or 747.

What time is the SFO departure and what would you prefer ?

I think it comes down to your personal time preference.

Cheers,

I am not familiar with SFO, but at LAX, UA flies into/out of T6/7 whereas OZ flies into/out of TBIT, which requires quite a walk and another TSA screening for the connection. If both UA and OZ are in the same terminal at SFO, then it makes SFO a better choice for connection.

OZ and UA are in connecting terminals at SFO (approx. 5 min walk), and the SFO International terminal where OZ is located is brand new. SFO is generally thought of as more efficient than LAX. I used SFO myself last trip, and there was very light traffic midday, so the Asiana flight was airborne in minutes. I also connected on UA out of PDX on that trip. UA only checked me through to SFO, but OZ checked me through to Saigon via Seoul (I did not check bags). For my next trip to SE Asia I'm on OZ again, but this time out of SEA.

At SFO, OZ flies out of the international terminal and you have to take a shuttle bus to get there from domestic terminals. Granted it would only take about 10-20 minutes, if you don't like the shuttle bus, the only way to walk is to go out of the secure area and get through security check again, or so it would be unless things have changed this year.

Well, I guess the shuttle bus option makes SFO somewhat better than LAX at least. :D

On the other hand, if you wish to make room for possible UA irrop situation (which definitely is non-trivial), LAX would be much better since the frequency is much higher than out of SFO.

EDIT: Daawgon beat me in his reply and looks like he's more updated than me in the matter. If there is any conflict between my info and his, feel free to disregard mine.

The 777 is only a 2-class, so there's no F from SFO.

I was leaning towards SFO because of the Star Alliance shuttle. However, I'm curious if we're going to have to leave security and check in at the OZ ticket counter? If that's the case then I really don't see much difference between LAX and SFO. The ticket would be an OZ ticket from DEN, with the United flight to SFO or LAX being an OZ codeshare.

It all depends on the time of year. In the winter, SFO has far more significant weather delays than LAX.

My trip from Portland to Saigon was all on one ticket also, and it might be because I needed a visa check before boarding the flights or the fact that I checked in with UA on the kiosk, however, UA would only book me through to SFO, and I simply walked the short distance between terminals to get to the OZ check-in desk. I could see where it might be more of a problem with checked luggage. If I were you, I'd just call up United and ask them.

By the way, Asiana flies out of Pier A at SFO for some reason, but LAX is still a shithole. I'd recommend SFO.

I love how both Korean Air and Asiana fly ICN-SFO, and when you fly that route your Asiana flight pulls up RIGHT NEXT TO the Korean Air flight, about 10 minutes after KE gets there.

Just returned from ICN on OZ and UA through SFO. I left last Thursday on 2 PNR's UA to DEN to SFO and OZ 213 SFO to ICN. SFO was a breeze to get through.
Here are some tips. Was able to check bags through to ICN but not able to get boarding passes for OZ leg.
- OZ leaves from the International concourse A terminal at SFO. The Transfer shuttle from Terminal 3 will only go to International terminal Concourse G (UA flights). Check www.united.com services and information and check SFO airport map. It will give you an idea where to walk to. There was not any way to go to G and cross to international terminal A without going through security. When you exit in Terminal 3. Stay to your right and follow signs to international terminal. A little bit of a walk. As you exit security you will go up some escalators to the international check in. The Asiana check in is on the far end next to security for concourse A. If you are flying OZ C to ICN you will have access to the China Air Dynasty lounge (some drinks and noodles in the lounge). There is a Il Fornio for sandwiches at the end of the International terminal but not as much to offer foodwise as compared to the G terminal.
It was the first time flying on OZ , what a wonderful airline....

The return today was uneventful...Arrived at SFO about 30 min late from ICN. There was minimal to any lines at immigration. Was through immigration and domestic security within 30min from deplane. Would still leave a 1.5 hr minimum connection time...have fun
