This is intersting ...effectively they are swapping 747 for 777 from HLG-LHR route to LAX-LHR and the 747 on SFO goes to YVR!
I know YVR has been busy as seats and prices have been tricky
this is in contradiction of comments the SFO had high yeilds , but all in all without studying it seems a reasonably major juggle , is this normal??
LONG-HAUL SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS
Air New Zealand will be making a number of changes on the long haul international routes for travel between 29 March and 25 October 2009.
• Daily AKL-LAX-LHR NZ2/1 services will be operated by B747 aircraft.
• Daily AKL-HKG-LHR NZ39/38 services will be operated by B777 aircraft.
• Daily AKL-HKG will now be operated by B777 aircraft in place of the B747 aircraft.
• Direct AKL-LAX services will be reduced from 14pw to 12pw. The B747 will operate 10 of these services with the remaining 2 operated by B777 aircraft.
• Direct AKL-SFO services will be reduced from 7pw to 5pw. The exception will be the July school holiday period where there will be 6pw. All flights will be
operated by B777 aircraft.
• Direct AKL-YVR services will operate 2pw with the exception of July/August where there will be 3pw. All services will be operated by B747 aircraft in place of the
B777 aircraft.
• Direct AKL-PVG and AKL-PEK services will remain at 3pw and 2pw respectively with the exception of May when only 1pw will operate between AKL-PEK and
2pw between AKL-PVG. Days of operation will also change. All flights will be operated by B777 aircraft.
• Direct AKL-HNL services will operate 2pw with the exception of July, August, and September where there will be 3pw. All flights are operated by B767.
• The weekly service to Los Angeles via RAR and the weekly service to Los Angeles via APW will continue to operate using a B767 aircraft.

Noticed that our CHC-ZQN-CHC flights next April were canceled and in their place are new flights with different flight numbers, that depart 10 minutes earlier (and arrive 5 minutes later) and are now on AT7 instead of the 733.
The funny thing is that the old flight (the one on the 733) still remains in the timetable on ANZ's website, as well as Apollo, WorldSpan, and Galileo! Which leads me to wonder whether the original flights really have been canceled!
Anyone else see discrepancies like this?

When airlines are in the middle of updating schedules it can take a few days for all the websites, timetables, etc to be fully updated. It is not instant (unfortunately).

Do these schedule reductions give them any spare fleet for anything?

Also good to note that the Northern Lights sale fares for PE are mainly on 777 routes rather than 747 (where PE is a much better hard product). For example, with NZ38/39 operated by a 777, a Northern Lights sale fare is only applicable on that flight rather than NZ2/1 on the 747. Could have posted this in the Northern Lights thread but it's applicable here now that the equipment changes have been announced for next year.

Does anyone have any further information on the change of days for the PEK/PVG services? I want to book a Wednesday AKL-PEK flight and desperately don't want the days to change...

When are you flying? The nearer the departure date, the less likely there will be schedule changes in the interim.
If the schedule changes after booking and a change of travel date does not suit you, NZ can reroute you instead. Of course that won't guarantee the alternative will also be convenient for you but at least you will have options.

My wife and I are booked to fly Y+ on NZ39 AKL-LHR via HKG in April '09 after these schedule changes come into effect. When I booked, the a/c was a 744 and we were able to request specific seats (which I did).
Now that the a/c has been changed to a 777, which has less Y+ seats (even if fitted out with the expanded Y+ cabin by then), I am not able to request specific seats on the booking for these sectors.
I am concerned that Y+ may be severely overbooked as a result of this a/c change. Does anyone on this forum know the NZ policy in these circumstances?
Should I cancel and rebook on another carrier to mitigate the risk of involuntary downgrade (we have been there before c/o BA, with whom we no longer fly as a result) and we do not want to go through that pain again. Similarly, I prefer not to be re-routed via LAX and fingerprinted like a criminal suspect just for the privilege of transiting the USA!
Many thanks in advance.

They are meant to be making Yplus on the 777s larger to the same amount of seats as on the 744. The finger printing at LAX isnt going to be that bad. It is planed that the New Zealand Customs service will introduce fingerprinting , photos, facescans for all pax. I cant rember when this comes into force but it should be soon.

OT sorry, but could you provide more information or links referring to fingerprinting of all PAX by NZ Customs (Immigration?) Service?

The policy in the case of overbooking of the U cabin is to upgrade, if possible.

Whoops, sorry about that - didn't spot the date there. Here is the detail of some Feb changes, but strangely omits your Feb 6th cancellation:
LONG-HAUL SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS
Air New Zealand will be making several schedule adjustments on the USA route for travel in February and March 2009 as follows:
• Cancellation of B744 service NZ6/5 AKL-LAX-AKL on Sun 22 Feb, Sat 7, Thu 19, Mon 23 and Fri 27 Mar 09.
• Cancellation of B744 service NZ8/7 AKL-SFO-AKL on Thu 5 and Sat 14 Feb 09.
• Cancellation of B772 service NZ8/7 AKL-SFO-AKL on Tue 24 Feb, Sun 8, Tue 17 and Tue 24 Mar 09.
Customers affected by this schedule change will be automatically re-accommodated for travel on the same day where available for Los Angeles passengers or on an alternative day of travel for San Francisco passengers.
Whoops. My mistake as well. I was bumped off 5th Feb NZ8.
In end have been re-routed to LAX and Delta have changed my connections to the east coast to depart from there for a US$50 fee. Then they have issued a voucher for NZ$421 as compensation for lower fares ex LAX, and I arrive at my destination 1.5 hours earlier due to better connections ex LAX. Ends up being a good schedule change for me ^

I just looked up my reservation for April NRT-CHC and noticed that the 777 has now changed to the 767-300. This change seems to be in effect every day of the week from NRT to both AKL and CHC :td:
This is a bit of a blow as I'd have much prefered the biz permier seat to seats they have on the 767 which seem more like BD premium economy seats than business class. Not what I'd expect for such a long flight.

I can't believe that change to a 767 on this route!!! This is such a long flight and last time I was on that flight C was pretty much full on both legs. How come they changed this to a smaller aircraft? I would never fly that route on a 767. Have they also reduced the fares in C at the same time because I would not think they can charge even 70% of the 777 or 747 fare for this now. Who would pay that much for an outdated product? :td:

I checked my NRT-AKL trip for July and it currently appears to still be a 777. Looks like it changes back around mid June. It has gone from being direct to a stop in KIX.
I'll be keeping a close on the aircraft!

Fares have gone up recently. Unfortunately I am flying this route in the affected time period. :( I'm not looking forward to it.

I a similar situation booked in C start April LHR-HKG and had preselected the two seats in the nose of the 747. Unfortunately it is now a 777 - but I can not preselect seats on that fligth. So it seems that they have not opened up the seat preselection yet.

Do we know the reason for the equipment downgrade? I'm leaning towards booking a flight for July next year (at the moment it still shows the 777) but my experience with NZ is that they change things at last minute. Maybe they just haven't planned past June at this stage and all future AKL-NRT will be downgraded in the future?
What are they doing with the aircraft that became available? Is it flying any other route?

I'm not sure of the reasons for the equipment downgrade. I assume the 777's are being deployed elsewhere.
Currently my trip is LHR-NRT-AKL using BMI miles.
I do have another option available to me LHR-SIN-MEL-AKL with SQ/NZ travelling on the 747 LHR-MEL & 777 for MEL-AKL which adds on 6 hours to the trip with the longer stopover in SIN & MEL but is tempting.
