cool! This is the one time that I would say that I am sorry you were not on the bad end of a bad beat!
900 bucks is still sweet.

I'm not much of a poker player, so feel free to weigh in, but do they use more than one deck at a time?

No. They use one deck. Hold 'Em has community cards. To win a bad beat jackpot, both players have to use the two cards in their hand, along with three of the community cards to make the hand. The 8h, 9h, Th must have been on the board. The lucky "badly beaten" person held the stupid end, 6h,7h, and someone held the high end, Qh, Jh.
I was once at a table where the 3,4,5,6, of diamonds were on the board. Someone held the A, someone held the 2, and someone held the 7. The A finally figured it out and dropped out after getting 3 bet on the river. The 2 never figured it out until the betting was capped at 5 bets and the cards turned over. Since both straight flushes only used one card from their hands and 4 cards from the board, to add insult to losing with a straight flush, the bad beat jackpot was not distributed.
Hope this is not too much information.
And congrats to all at the table where the jackpot was won.

my original LVA post on May 14th 2008 :
I'm departing for AC on Thursday for a two day trip (non-stop junket from Boston to Atlantic City Airport).
One of the reasons for the trip, is to see my mom and step-father on Thursday (they fly Spirit from Fort Lauderdale to Atlantic City) before they go to visit relatives in Brooklyn.
Anyway, my step-father who is a very knowledgeable gambler, often has the worst luck ---
Well, that all changed last night.
I got a frantic telephone call from Caesars AC last night.
From what I can gather, since they were very excited (I'll have to fill in the rest of the details when we talk later).
My step-father won half of the Bad Beat Poker Jackpot, which basically amounted to a bit over $50K :))
I know he was playing $1/$2 hold-em poker, I'll have to verify the hand he had that lost.
Anyway, I'm just so excited for them!
Guess I know who's paying for dinner on Thursday night in Atlantic City. :)
Here are the details :
My step-father (Artie) was dealt AA
other player (who won) was dealt QQ
Flop : A Q 3
turn : 4
river : Q
Winner had 4 Queens
Artie lost with Aces-Full
Bad Beat Player gets 50% of the Jackpot (which was just over $100,500)
Winning Player gets 25% of the Jackpot
and the remaining 7 players at the table received a split of the remaining 25%
edit to add
Exact rules for the bad beat, per the Harrah's Atlantic City Website
Bad Beat Jackpot is paid when a hand of Full House, Aces full of Jacks or better, loses to a bigger hand at showdown. Both of the hole cards of the winning hand and losing hand must be in play. 50% of the jackpot is paid to the loser of the hand, 25% paid to the winner of the hand, and 25% is divided between all other players dealt into that hand.

Two-card straight flush over two-card straight flush is the hardest jackpot combination to hit, though that's also the only one I've had occur while playing. The aces-full beat described is about 100x more likely to occur. You guys are lucky!

Bad Beat Jackpot rules vary. Some clubs award the jackpot, like Harrahs AC, for aces-full-of-jacks or better beat by anything. Some require aces full or better beat by four of a kind or better, aces-full-of-tens or better beat by four of a kind or better, or even quads or better beaten by quads or better.
It is usually a rule that both hole cards must play.

The curious thing about this is that this was the second visit to Vegas where I played live Holdem.
In 2006 on the first occasion I was seated at a table in Luxor where another bad beat went off. About $350 that time. It was quads over quads.
So I am 2/0

You should've been in Colorado. :p
The Lodge poker room's bad beat of over $600,000 was hit two weeks ago. The room has 20 tables, and it was literally packed from open to close every day for the past two months.
Quad sixes beaten by a ten-high straight flush.
They altered the rules so that...
40% to the loser
30% to the winner
20% table share
10% to everyone else in the room
A friend was at the table next to the one that hit it, so he walked away with just under $500.
Last week, their Tier 2 & 3 Bad Beats (over $400,000 and $300,000) were also hit.

When did they "alter" the rules? Who was helped? Hurt?

Not too sure when, but it's always "house can alter rules at any time".
Normally it's a 40/30/30 loser/winner/table split, so the table missed out on some additional money; although I wouldn't complain walking away with $16,000 instead of $23,000 just by sitting at a table. :p
Initially, once the BBJ hits a certain point, the Tier 2 and 3 BBJs get allocated more funding; however, The Lodge eventually changed that so the Tier 1 got the majority of the BBJ funds.
