Interesting reading - the trial of the backscatter 'virtual strip search' scanner is reported to be starting now for passengers departing MEL Domestic.

I figured there is close to zero interest in TSS forum but perhaps some interest for FTers flying from MEL. Here's the story and the full monty info.

Melbourne Airport scanners 'will show private parts' (http://www.smh.com.au/news/news/airport-scanners-will-show-genitals/2008/10/15/1223750083412.html)[SMH]
"It does see through clothing, but it's not a photographic image, it's a low-energy X-ray that reflects off the skin," said Cheryl Johnson, general manager of the Office of Transport Security.

"It will show the private parts of people, but what we've decided is that we're not going to blur those out, because it severely limits the detection capabilities. It is possible to see genitals and breasts while they're going through the machine, though."

Well, I think that the only positive thing that I can say about this is that I give the Australian officials some credit for stating that they aren't going to blur things since they actually want to strip search every passenger and get it done right rather than do it half-baked like they would in the USA. Beyond that, I am interested to see what the outrage will be in Oz, if any.

At least it is voluntary for now, though I wonder what level of notification the passengers will have of the voluntary and invasive nature of the device.

This machine was going to be used here at Stavanger Airport for airport employees. For a trial period only. An outrage became an effect and they didn`t use them. But soon enough.....they`ll be here giving the security people a chuckle and naughty moments.......:td:
