Rented quite a bit at the National counter at MCO so have that down to a science.
But TPA is offering better fares and better times than MCO on AA for the dates I'm looking at. So curious what's it like to rent at TPA compared to MCO both convenience and price wise and how long should I allow to travel to and from TPA to Disney World during non rush hours? TIA!

I can't comment about National at TPA, but figure about 1 1/2 hour drive vs. less than 1/2 hour from MCO to Disney. This is best case, and can be worse depending on traffic.

I've been to Tampa a few times because I could get a better fare there as well.
Getting a car from National wasn't an issue, even though it's off site. The bus runs frequently and it's not a long drive. The EA is fairly large.
The drive to Disney is a little more than an hour, depending upon the time and day you go. One time we sailed right through on a Sat, and the last time there was something going on at the stadium, again, on Sat, and we were stuck in traffic for about 20 minutes.
We didn't find the drive all that terrible, but consider I'm already used to sitting in my car 1 hour each way to work :)
We much prefer the 20 minutes it takes us to get to/from MCO and the fact that National is right in the parking lot along with many other car rentals, but, for a decent sum of money, we'll take the drive to/from TPA if it's a week long trip. We've also split the airports arriving into one and leaving from another, with no issues with the car. You might want to check that as well.
Sometimes it's only 1 day that's causing your fare to go up, and if you use TPA on that day it may save you almost as much money and you don't have to drive back and forth.
