Diners Club International Adds New Airport Lounges in U.K.
Wednesday October 8, 8:02 am ET
18 new lounges open at 14 U.K. airport locations

RIVERWOODS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Diners Club International, a business unit of Discover Financial Services (NYSE: DFS - News), today announced the opening of 18 new cardholder club lounges at 14 airport locations in the United Kingdom. The addition of these new lounges now brings the total of Diners Club airport lounges to 123 worldwide.

All 18 Diners Club U.K. lounges are currently open and accessible to Diners Club’s more than 6.5 million cardholders at the following airport locations in England: Birmingham; Bristol; Nottingham East Midlands; London Gatwick; London Heathrow; Humberside; Leeds Bradford; Manchester; Newcastle; and Stansted. The remaining new U.K. airport lounge locations include four in Scotland: Aberdeen; Edinburgh; Glasgow; and Inverness.

“The opening of these additional lounges provides us with a tremendous opportunity to offer our Diners Club cardholders even more convenience and value when they travel throughout the U.K.,” said Joe Hurley, deputy president of Diners Club International. “The Diners Club lounge program is another example of our commitment to meeting the needs of cardholders.”

The addition of these new lounges now brings the total of Diners Club airport lounges to 123 worldwide. The 105 other lounges are free, so logically these should be as well. If this is true then: WOW!

But there is still no mention of these new lounges on the Diners Club website (http://www.dinersclub.com/en/DCIHome/airport.jhtml). Outside of this list, some lounges that allow DC members in for a fee are known to exist (e.g. Brussels and Athens).

Since the new lounges are operated by Servisair, it seems that Diners has struck a deal covering all Servisair lounges in the UK:

"Servisair operates 18 Lounge at airports through the UK including Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Humberside, Inverness, Leeds/Bradford, London Gatwick (North & two facilities in South Terminal), London Heathrow (Terminals 1 and 3), London Stansted, Manchester (Terminals 1 and 2) and Newcastle."

Only five UK lounges have been uploaded to www.dinersclub.com. Two at LHR (T1 and T3), two at MAN and one in GLA. The guest fee is listed as 30 USD(!!). Wonder what happened to the rest of the UK lounges (13 of them)? Maybe there is some fee involved...

I also visited the DC UK web site. What I find really strange is that this news is not mentioned there at all. You would think that this would be great news for UK DC cardholders esp. if all the 18 lounges would materialize.

For me this is still a big step in the right direction, although reopenings of Dc lounges in at least FRA and BRU would be badly needed as well as new lounges in OSL and in HEL.

That's because the announcement from last year is still there on the front page.

UK and Irish lounge service will be terminating with an effective date of 31st October 2007.
This means that DC cardholders will no longer be able to use these lounges after this date.

So in the space of a year, they removed lounge access in the UK, and are now reintroducing it

Let's hope they have learnt their lesson.

Sent off a Email to Diners club UK this weekand this is there reply,

Dear Mr BravoKilo

Thank you for your recent communication.

Please be informed that Diners Club cardholders, both Personal and Corporate customers, will no longer have access to airport lounges in the UK & Ireland with effect from 1st November 2007. However, you can access international lounges following the link given below:

http://www.dinersclub.com/en/DCIHome/airport.jhtml - International Lounge

Please be advised that the cost of this benefit and the value placed on this by the feedback we have received from customers was not sufficient for us to continue offering the program.

The Airport lounge access is an additional benefit of Diners Club membership that is not an integral part of the agreement entered into when an individual applies for a Diners Club card. We request you to look into our News & Promotion column, on our website regarding details about airport lounges.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service Department on 0870 1900 011.

Yours sincerely

If traveling with my wife and young kids, can they come in as well at no extra charge? It says kids are welcome

My wife also carries a DC card based on my account, kids obviously don't.

What happens if my wife was not an authorized user on my DC card and did not carry a card?

Really? Which one is it in ATH? Any chance somebody has compiled a list of these "unofficial" lounges anywhere (like at this forum :) )

On a more negative note: I just learnt today that DC access to the Menzies lounges at AMS will be discontinued as of 15 November.

I will try it tomorrow in Newcastle before going into the KL/AF lounge there. I don't use the DC lounges as much after having reach Gold with KL/AF and soon hitting Platinum. However it would still be nice to have as a backup.

Really? I used to use those lounges a lot when I travelled through AMS. Real shame, they weren't great lounges but they were far better than sitting out in the terminal.

Ok so I went into the Servisair lounge in NCL (happens to be the AF/KL lounge as well, which I didn't realise as I mostly use the BA lounge).

It is free to get in with DC so no charge. Turns out the staff had a memo circulated recently, but it doesn't provide much detail, just announces that DC now have access to the lounge.
