I am traveling on CX from SFO to KUL and then on a seperate ticket on MH from KUL to Langkawi (LGK). (Layover is for 1:45)
Will I need to clear immigration / customs in KUL or LGK?
Will CX check my back thru to LGK or do I claim and re-checkin at MH?

You clear immigration in KUL either way.
Assuming you get your bag checked thru, you take the shuttle train from the International Satellite Terminal to the Main Terminal with the rest of the passengers and follow signs (to the left) for Domestic Connections. There is a separate immigration area that has direct access to the domestic piers.
If you don't have a BP for your connection, the MH transfer desks are easy to spot.

Thanks.
Hopefully CX will check the bags thru to LGK.

You will have to collect your bags at KUL and clear Customs. It's standard all over the world, that you have to collect your bags and clear Customs when you switch to a domestic carrier. The only exception is when the same plane that you travelled on flies on to the next destination in the same country, eg LHR to JFK and then on to SFO on the same plane.

I'm sorry, but that's just about as far from the truth as you can get. I know the US make you do it and that they aren't the only country, but the practice is certainly NOT the International Standard, and is definitely not the case for the OP in KUL.

I am happy to be corrected if anyone has personal experience but how would you clear Customs in LGK on a domestic MH flight?

LGK is a tax-free island so there is less need to clear customs.
Domestic departures is one level below International departures in the main terminal.
Definitely get you bags checked through if possible. Bags take forever to arrive at the carousel at KUL

Coming off a domestic with international transfer bags ? it used to be there wasn't any. Now that there is international service into LGK, sometimes the transfer bags are delivered to that area and you clear customs, sometimes not.
My local airport is domestic only. Therefore when I check my bag in anywhere in the world via LHR, it comes out here in BHD with the rest of the domestic bags from the LHR-BHD flight and I walk straight out.

Thanks I'll try to check through to LGK when I next visit. You have to clear Customs in Australia at your first destination, like America. And I think it's the same with countries which have strict quarantine/customs regulations.

Well got back from my trip and CX did agree to check the bags thru to LGK. In KUL I had to clear immigration and then head to the domestic terminal to catch the MH flight to LGK. In LGK claimed bags and just walked out. Tried to hand my customs declaration to the officer there but she was not interested.
