I have an Amex blue with MR, and Gold Rewards Plus. I have a balance transfer on my Blue, which should be paid off in a year or so. I was thinking once I've paid off the Blue, what incentive would I have to keep the Gold? The Blue has no annual fee, and if I keep paying it off, I still wouldn't be paying any interest. AFIAK, the benefits are the same, and I earn the "always double miles" at grocery stores, etc, while the Gold only earns double miles on planes/hotels

Without the Gold (or Green) account the Blue switches to MR Express, which cannot be redeemed for travel, among other things.

Just would like to share the info that you even can enroll the Amex Blue Card into the faster Membership rewards programme. @:-)

Don't know the exact yearly fee for your country but in Germany would be 30,-- Euro per year. With this you can transfer the MR points to all programmes involved and get 1 MR point for 1 Euro use of the card.

Maybe this helps.

I just learned that it cost $40 a year to upgrade the Blue to the regular Membership Rewards program. This seems to be the best option since $95 seems to be the going rate for a AMEX in the MR program.

OK What gives? I just called AMEX MR about the fee to upgrade a blue card to the regular MR program. They claimed you could not do it. You would have to have a green or gold card to be part of the regular MR program.
Anyone else talk to MR lately?

I spoke to Amex less than a month ago and they said it can be done. You probably reached a CSR who was unaware. Call and ask to be transferred to the Membership Rewards department.
