I've felt like crud ever since getting back from Mexico two weeks ago...I finally got around to going to the doctor today and found out I have Dysentry and was prescribed Metronidazole and a pile of other things...

I guess the bonus is I can get caught up on my flyertalk fix but...

I ate the street food while in Playa Del Carmen and probably inadvertantly ended up ingesting water because of the way glasses were cleaned but I'm honestly pretty sure I got sick was because I used a lot of antacids trying to keep the heartburn to a min...and that left my tummy without it natural protection against these kinda buggers...

So IMHO don't beware the street food beware the Antacids...

You really think the Tums made you susceptible to the gut bugs?

I think so but I'm going to discuss it with my DR.

I took zantac and pepto pills every day which would significantly lower the PH level i my stomach....The high PH (acid basically) level normally kills this stuff off before it can affect you...Also with the PH level lowered it leaves one susceptible to infection...

I was running a 102 fever at the doctors office yesterday and about the same prior to that but I'm pretty sure it's gone down today due to the Metronidazole

Maybe this is why I never get Monte's revenge and sometimes am constipated while visiting Mexico.....high acid!!

I'm sorry you're sick, I hope you get well soon! However, It's not like the Sex and the city movie as in you just take a sip and you get awfully sick, as a matter of fact I believe playa del carmen's water is potable.

I'm more than sure it should have been the food, it is a fact that the bacteria in the food stalls make their food sooo delicious but I'm sure that's what made you sick, not the water. Yeah, even mexicans get dysentery from eating at food stalls but it only lasts a couple of days as we're more used to it.

Hope you get better!

I was running a 102 fever at the doctors office yesterday and about the same prior to that but I'm pretty sure it's gone down today due to the MetronidazoleSympathies. Sickest I ever got was after eating the raw oysters from a street vendor in Mazatlan. Made the flight back interesting.

Yeah, I know. Honestly, that's actually the least bad idea I'[ve ever had in Mexico after 6 cervezas.

Bonus points, I decided against scuba diving because I heard Mazatlan is downstream from the sewage treatment plant.

Hope you recovered from this problem. The principal etiology of the so called "Moctezuma's revenge" are bateries, specially E. Coli. You were prescribed Metronidazol, an antiparasitic which is not the primary election for bacterial diseases, but for colitis from amoebas, responsable for less than 10% of the cases.

Fortunately, more than half recover with or without medicines.
