Title says it all. I have one of these thingies:

http://mobilitytoday.com/article.php?a=Verizon_XV6600_Reviews&p=1

It's actually a great phone/pda that runs on a pretty fast sort-of 3G network in the city.

I've been staring at it for a couple of days, as it's taking up space on a shelf. I know I will never use it, but I'm wondering is someone else can use it?

It was on Verizon, like I said, but it has a sim slot too, so I guess anyone with sim and the right network could use it.

I want to put it on CL, but I don't want to rip anyone off.

Ideas?

Any of the dualmode CDMA/GSM phones will typically not work in a frequency that works in the US, they are only dual band GSM and they ummmm.... intentionally prevent them from working with US gsm providers, it is not a matter of locked, but radio frequency.

BTW I am not aware of this model being GSM and CDMA dual mode at all, there is such a samsung pocketpc, but not this XV6600

Yeah, I think that it's CDMA only - even though it has a sim slot that is of no use to verizon.

I can sell it to a verizon user (about 3 million here in NYC) so that's not really a problem. I just don't want to give them something they won't be able to use.

Without the wireless it's a nice stone-age PocketPc... :D

You can sell it anywhere, but you need to be sure the ESN is "clean", it also has to be free from any other Verizon account.

Yes, it is fairly easy to unlock it. Also, many buy them for parts. Just put in your ad that it is a Verizon locked PDA and let the buyer beware.

Could you elaborate as to what it means to have the "ESN be clean".

Essentially it means the ESN is not reported as stolen, or that it belongs to a delinquent account. Also, do NOT give anyone on Ebay, Craigslist or other site the ESN before they pay for the device. I've heard a lot of scams happen when people get their hands on a working or valid ESN and use it for insurance scams or other trouble...

You can try calling verizon and tell them you are going overseas for sometime and would like to use an overseas sim card. If you have bought the cell phone for some time, they would have provided the code to unlock it free of charge (at least that happens to my friend at T-mobile).

Verizon doesn't use SIM cards except in dual GSM/CDMA phones. If this phone is CDMA-only and has a card slot that's most likely for an R-UIM. R-UIM is the CDMA version of SIM, but the Verizon version of the phone has disabled this slot because Verizon uses non-card identification (account linked to ESN).

Two possibilities-
The slot can be activated if you can find the firmware from a non-US version of the phone. A few Asian countries (China and Thailand, for example) use this. Naturally, this would limit you to selling your phone in those countries, as the phone will then not work US-style.

It can be sold as is and re-programmed to work on another US CDMA provider (MetroPCS, Cricket, etc).

Go for it. If no one in the US wants to buy it at least you may be able to sell it overseas.

Make sure you can physically insert a sim card in the slot and the electronics (rather than just an indentation) are there. I used to have the Sprint equivalent of this phone and the injection molded plastic under the battery had a place for a SIM, but there was no electronics in the SIM.

You can activate Verizon phones on the CDMA provider in Indonesia without an RSIM. If the phone is unlocked it is easily reprogrammed for their network.

How old is the phone? (The article you posted seems to be four years old.)

How old is the battery?

Look on eBay to see if anybody else is selling your model and for how much. I sold a Treo 650 about 18 months ago on eBay for 185.00 (price went up about 90.00 in the last 30 minutes of auction). A current "smartphone" will get a good price on eBay. It is often MUCH cheaper than a phone from Verizon if you are not eligible for upgrade pricing or if you do not want to extend your contract. I have bought several phones on eBay. Typcially they are one generation removed from the newest models Verizon has. Listing the model number of the phone would get you more help. The HTC phones (XV6700, XV6800, etc.---also known as UTStarcom or Audiovox) are desirable phones, mainly because they are versatile and highly hackable by those who know about such things.
