am on 747 on NZ. They have given my husband and me seats 11 E & F together in the 2nd business cabin. We are on award tickets. Have been told front cabin is better but it seems that is said by single travelers looking for privacy. Is the front cabin what we should choose. Right now it looks like 5A & K are available. Please advise. Thanks a lot

5A and 5K are a long way apart, not good for couples.

The best config for couples who want to chat during the flight is two seats in different rows. For example 11A and 12A or 5K or 6K. Because of the way the E and F seats are angled, it makes it harder to comfortably talk to people.

See if you can grab 1A & 1K very close together and easy to talk to each other, great for couples. Only down side is that the overhead bins start at 3.

Not always, I've been in the front cabin on an NZ*S comp upgrade. Maybe KC helps.

Yip that sure would, I think KC gives you about the same status as *G when it comes to seating.

It does with access to Space+ while a Silver does not get it.

Thanks to these discussions, I've requested 3A and 3B for Mrs Kangela and me on an upcoming sojourn to SYD in a 772. FTers rock :D

don't know if anyone mentioned this but i don't think you can switch to row 5. that's in the "premium" seat section for air new zeland frequent fliers. you are on an award ticket but unless your award is through air new zeland and you have status with air new zeland that part of the cabin is not available to you.

thanks everyone for all your expertise. I thought i was doing a great thing getting business class on nz in peak season and now it could be 15 long hours with the configuration of business class. Does anyone of you experts think upstairs in business might be the way to go?. Looking forward to your ideas. Thanks so much.

Not really. The aisle is wider upstairs than downstairs (if you want to look at each other) and if you take seats beside each other (for talking) the angle is slightly sharper and thus not quite as well aligned for talking over the top of the seat.

just back from 23 days in NZ. Thank you for the great tip on best business seats on Air NZ for couples. We took your advice and booked 11k and 12k and it was actually quite perfect. Of course, i took the one behind so I could talk without having to turn around!

I do the same (when I'm not solo) .. I have a BAD neck.. and turning to chat to the seat "behind" becomes painful rapidly!!!! :D
Front cabin excellent, 2nd cabin nearly excellent, upstairs nearly nearly excellent. I'm happy with any of them.

Can anyone weigh in on the difference in business class, if any, between the 747-400 and the 777? Which is preferable? I can fly out of SFO or LAX, so just looking to find the better of the two. Opinions please!!:)

Essentially the same except for layout. 747 has nose, upstairs (forward of emergency exit only) and downstairs rear zone. None of these zones are big, but upstairs suffers from sharing with premium economy (and slower to exit the aircraft).
777 just has one largeish zone (7 rows).
Note Air NZ could change a/c type between booking and date of flight.

There is no difference, except the front cone of the 747 is more private. Go for LAX - the lounge is fantastic, better than the manky RCC at SFO. Plus you usually get the choice of 2 flights ex LAX: NZ1 or NZ5.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. Mrs. Sydney, the info about the lounge in LAX is very much appreciated, as we will have a few hours to pass there!!

While not having flown NZ previously, I generally prefer 744 to 772 or any 777 aircraft. Just personal preference, love the queen of the skies. :)
But alas, for an upcoming award only NZ5 was available and it's currently scheduled to be 772 on the particular date. Assuming space is available, would NZ at LAX permit a switch to NZ1 an hour earlier? Odds of getting 1A/K at that point are practically none but even so, it's also a chance for me to actually ride in the bubble of a 744 too. :)

It is most unlikely that NZ will allow you to catch the earlier flight on an award flight. NZ only allow their G and GE to fly in the cone of the 744. It really has to be the best cabin of the 744 to fly in – some might disagree and say, UD.
Make sure you check out the NZ LAX Lounge. It’s one of the best lounges at LAX by far.
Enjoy flying Air New Zealand.
