The Caribbean - Sounds like "Key-reh-sau" - Curacao
HGTV was on last night as I was falling asleep (hey, don't judge) and it was one of those shows where people try to buy property in an interesting vacation destination.
I didn't catch the beginning of the episode, but the destination -- which looked quite beautiful and interesting -- sounded like "key-reh-sau". I scratched down "Kirisau" on my notepad and fell asleep.
Come morning, googling around and I have no idea where they were talking about. All I know, aside from my misunderstanding the name, is that the predominant language is either Dutch or a dialect that contains a mixture of Dutch, English, Spanish and others. It appeared to be an island -- somewhat tropical. They were looking at houses and condos in the US$200k range.
Help? I keep a running list of places to visit some day and I'd love to add this one!

Would agree it's gotta be Curacao. And I can definitely say it's a great place. Spent some time there last year and explored the island end-to-end. The official language is Dutch but Papiamento (local dialect) is widely spoken. Very friendly, and good weather (south of where the hurricanes usually come in).

It was House Hunters International, in Curacao. Wasn't watching but I've seen that episode. :)
I prefer the episodes of people buying homes in Europe. It's often a British person or couple buying a home on the continent, though sometimes it's an American living in Paris or somewhere in Italy as well.
I did not like one episode with a pompous jerk American living in Buenos Aires and buying a vacation home in Uruguay.
Huzzah! FT to the rescue. Unfortunately, it looks like one daily flight on American from Miami and two on AF/KLM from AMS won't help me too much.
Here's to getting there sooner rather than later.

I did not like one episode with a pompous jerk American living in Buenos Aires and buying a vacation home in Uruguay. That "pompous jerk" was Michael Koh, president of ApartmentsBA.com. If you'll remember, he was the real estate agent in another episode where an American was looking for an apartment in BA.

When I was in Curacao, the native inhabitants were pronouncing the name of their island as KUR-SAUW, in only two syllables.

wonder how far away from the beach those $200k homes area... acording to my guide on a Jeep Safari Tour of the neighboring Aruba... the homes go for around $400k+ in most decent locations, while the prime ones are obviously in the millions.
wouldn't mind investing there myself if I had the dough!

I'm going in May with a friend from NY - DH goes to bridge tourney and I go to Curacao:p We're staying at The Royal Sea Aquarium Resort - anything we shouldn't miss? TIA, Linda
I thought everyone was familiar with this island thanks to the popular liquor blue Curacao (http://www.drinksmixer.com/desc240.html).
I was talking to a person once and she kept talking about some drink she liked made with "blue ka-rock-o". I tried to correct her but she wouldn't budge.
