Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Cheapest way to ship something to Australia?

I apologize if this isn't the right forum, but it seems the most appropriate place to get the answer.

I have a dear friend in Australia who pines for an antique typewriter. I managed to find one for $5 at an auction, and it weighs about 35 lbs. Apparently USPS has done away with the cheap surface mail, and they cheapest rate they offer is almost $150. FedEx, UPS and DHL are all much higher than this (around the $400 range).

Does anyone know of a cheaper shipping option?

AFAIK there is no more "Surface Mail" between the US and Oz... at all.
