Got an offer today for a Platinum Medallion status upgrade on Delta in exchange for purchasing a full fare international business ticket. You have to do it by December 31, 2008 and it's good through February 2010.
I'm unlikely to do that, and in any event I haven't flown Delta in years, but it seems like maybe Amex is starting to send more offers, which would be very good.

Snailmail, from Amex.
In the regular black envelope - same basic look as for the Wynn offer. It says "Welcome to SkyMiles Platinum Medallion Status Courtesy of the Centurion Card and Delta," and then says you will receive status by registering at a special Delta site and purchasing a full-fare international business class (J class) ticket.
Is the purchase sufficient, or do you actually have to fly on the ticket? Otherwise I see plenty of purchase + refund activity. :p

Great point. This is probably something many didn't think of. I imagine purchasing would grant the status. What's to stop someone from purchasing a ticket 11 months out? Are they going to wait until you fly the ticket to credit the status? Somehow I don't think so.

According to the offer:
"Registration and all travel must be completed by December 31, 2008."

OK, so for $8k i can get upgraded from gold medallion to platinum medallion. I generate so many MR points that I fly Business class for free every time I go to Europe.....can't see any value here. Perceived benefit with not value at all.....is that what Centurion is coming to?

"International" business doesn't have to be to Europe, does it? From what we've been told, one could fly ATL - PTY in J for $2,000 and PM (where there's not much of a premium from discounted business).

The promotion also specifies "full-fare international businesselite ticket." Is the ATL-PTY business elite?

The BusinessElite wasn't mentioned previously in the thread (just international, Business, at a J code) - here are the markets where DL offers BusinessElite:

Now, what if you purchase ATL-JFK-YYZ-JFK-ATL, with the ATL-JFK-ATL booked into J? Is that purchasing an international J class ticket?
