While cleaning out some old luggage I found an old nano that I thought i'd left on a plane. obviously the battery was dead so I plugged it in and it started to charge
(seemed to work fine) when I came back to it a couple hours later it was/is completely dead. Any ideas? moisture? battery fried? can you open it up somehow? Not a big deal since it was given up as lost but I find it strange that it seemed to work fine after 10 minutes of charging.

Any thoughts?

The battery could be old at this point. Does it otherwise run fine, as long as it's connected to the charger?

You can get replacement battery kits for about 20 bucks:

unfortunately it doesnt do anything anymore whether plugged in or not. I was able to remove the end cap where the 2 sockets are and it looks like there is some rust in there but the tiny and i mean tiny phillips screw seems to be stripped so i cant get in any deeper

Circuit City will give you $0.96 if you trade it in towards the purchase of a new iPod. Other models are worth considerably (and sometimes surprisingly...) more. Check out http://nextworth.com/circuitcity.aspx
