D/FW’s Founders Plaza, closed since January 2007, will re-open in its new location at the north end of the airport within the Grapevine city limits.

The new six-acre Founders Plaza, built at a cost of about $3.5 million, is more than double the size of the original plaza and has more parking, shade pavilions and 24-hour security.
The new site’s observation area has a panoramic view of the airport and a sound system that allows visitors to listen to air traffic controllers direct air traffic inside the airport tower.
The airport’s rotating 50-foot-tall light beacon is also a prominent feature of the new plaza, officials said.

The original plaza was dedicated in 1995 and has hosted several significant events, including an employee memorial the day after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the airport’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2004.

The airport is asking visitors of the original plaza to share their photos and memories to be posted online at www.dfwairport.com/founders.
