Asiana Club - Asiana will not transfer miles... any suggestions?

Hello all.

I'll get straight to the point. The wife of a close friend of mine died unexpectedly, a couple of weeks ago. My friend called up Asiana to try to get his wife's miles transfered but was told that the transfer was not possible. They are both enrolled in the Asiana club family program and the wife had accrued mileage into the mid-100k range (forgot the exact number). He has 'only a couple of thousand' miles in his account. IIRC, they were both silver-level members or at least that's the card they had.

I was under the impression that most if not all airlines would transfer miles at death to the surviving spouse - that would seem the decent thing to do. My friend is not the confrontational type and I think he plans on letting the miles go, which would be a shame.

So, I'd like to know if any of you guys had any suggestions or had a similar experience that you'd like to share that may help out his situation. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry to hear about your friends bereavement , but to be honest I thought that with most airlines the points are non-transferable and as such when you 'expire' so do they

I am afraid that a quick check of the program rules seems to put the matter beyond question - the miles are never the 'property' of the account holder

10. Accrued mileage in the member's account does not constitute the property of the member and remains the property of Asiana Airlines until redeemed. Neither the accrued mileage nor any other member benefits are transferable upon a member's death, dissolution of marriage or through any other operation of law. In the event of member's death, the account will be closed.

Hey Kiwi, thanks for the reply.

Your quote of Asiana's rules certainly does not look good. I was however, under the impression that most airlines would transfer miles to the spouse for a small fee ~ $75, even when the airline's policy was not to. Anybody else have any other suggestions or am I being stubborn?:(

Asiana has the Family Mileage Plan which allows miles from active accounts to be pooled among relatives. This option is only open of course for persons alive. I don't suggest you do go down that route but it is a possibility a creative person might take.

Oh, and welcome to FT, timber even if the circumstances of you being here are not good.

The only other option really is to impersonate as your friend's wife to redeem as many flights as possible. (You didn't hear it from me , officially)

Most asian airline programmes to do not allow transferring miles to anyone else. Basically its a use it or lose it policy.

.

except of course for the fact that the bereaved spouse has already talked to OZ so presumably OZ have closed the account as per their T&C

Thanks for the welcome DownUnder. Looks like a great community here.

I did a little research and I dont think he can redeem the miles online. Looks like he is out of luck. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion but I dont think he is at a place where I can ask him if someone could impersonate his wife.

I also heard a case that pooled with dead family member and use the miles. It initially requires all members' sign, but after that, only on-line confirmations are needed which means that anyone can do for else. But if he called to Asiana and already let them know someone's dead, this chance may blow out.
