Travel Technology - Identity Theft - both Yahoo and Facebook - what to do?

My relative (living with me in Ottawa) and an acquaintance in Holland had been communicating over the last year, by phone and by email (through yahoo,/yahoo chat and through facebook).

They have compared notes a few minutes ago, and discovered that both have had their identities "stolen" - perhaps for the last 3 or more months - each of the two has received comments purportedly from the other, but actually from someone else. The statements/comments from the fake persons (on the Canada and the Holland side, each) have been derogatory, insulting, humiliating etc.

Both feel that this is a major security breach - but for obvious reasons (ie they feel that such communications may not be secure), they do not want to send their complaints electronically to the facebook and yahoo people. Is there some way to communicate to these people, directly by phone, or some other secure way?

No.

Facebook is notoriously hard to get in touch with EVEN FOR ADVERTISERS!

Why not just change your password?

Why not just change your password?

Make sure the email address in the account is correct before doing so, just in case.

And it isn't really identity theft unless it also has resulted in their real world identity being compromised, like SSN or CCs issued or something like that. Otherwise it is just a password/account being compromised.

Before changing passwords, I sweep the PC's to see if there are any keyloggers installed.

I take it they've been clicking on every video sent to them?

I am not an IT expert. I had to look at the wikidpedia article on keylogging/keystroke logging.

Even after reading it, it is not clear to me as to what must I do to:

1) sweep our PCs, to see if our computers have indeed been compromised; if so, remove the outsiders' access to our computers.

2) what is the best anti keylogging software, to prevent a recurrence of this problem - is it one of the antispyware software.

SpyBot S&D is generally the best anti-spyware/keylogger program to use.

It can be downloaded from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Also, make sure that they have an up to date AV running - AVG is free, and very good.

Thanks, for all the responses.

In terms of the last response, can that program be used for both:

i) detecting and disabling keylogging type programs that are being used to access your PC/email by outsiders?

ii) preventing new keylogging type programs from being able to access your PC/email by outsiders?
