Hello, I will be travelling from JFK to YVR in Nov. I have read the menu thread and I know there is a meal service in First class. I am just wondering what there is to be expected for Y. Has anyone been on this leg before who might be able to give me some information on the meal service. Do they provide the open bar/snack for the 6+ Intra-N. America flight? I do hope they provide more than all the American and Canadian airlines. I am so not impressed by their buy on board policy. Thanks a lot!

There is a dinner meal service in Y, usually with three choices - 2 meat entrees and a vegetarian pasta entree. Usually one "Chinese" and one "Western" meat preparation although it varies - I've had sweet and sour pork and chicken frequently, spicy chicken with rice, chicken with potatoes, salmon with rice, and a variety of pasta meals. The meals are pretty good for airline food in Y. Personally, I'd rather buy-on-board than have, say, Continental's sandwiches - and I'm always happy with the CX meal on JFK-YVR.

There will also be a small salad of some kind, usually containing some kind of meat or fish, a dessert item and a roll. Drinks are free and available. Many people sleep on the flight as it leaves quite late.

There is the excellent CX AVOD system, of course. It's the best deal from NYC to YVR :)

On a related note, does the YVR-JFK leg follow the normal Canadian mode of clearing U.S. customs and immigration before boarding? Or does this flight operate differently due to the through traffic from HKG?

You will clear US immigrations and customs in New York.
