Hilton HHonors - Hilton Galveston Suffers A Lot of Damage from Ike

I turned on the Weather Channel this morning because I have some family down in the area and my sister goes to Baylor.

The reporter was reporting from the Hilton and she said the suffered a lot of damage to exterior, the sales office, and the lobby. The GM was closing the hotel to everyone because it was not safe to stay it. They were supposed to have the TX National guard stay there while they help with the cleanup, but they now have to find somewhere else.

I think FOX has a reporter at the Hilton Clear Lake. She said a glass atrium in the lobby was damaged and glass is everywhere.

I was under the impression the media was at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston. I guess the Hilton's just down the road and they were able to get out and drive around.

I was there last week. So sad.

Been watching a lot too, since my son lives in Houston. Despite the damage to the Hilton, it's still standing, which can't be said for many homes and businesses in Galvaston. :(

I saw an NBC reporter on MSNBC doing a live report from the Clear Lake Hilton. Lots of damage. Apparently, the guests (mostly families of hotel employees, reporters, and disaster officials) were brought to the lobby during the huricane because it was thought to be safer. But the the atrium windows got blown in -- the NBC reporter barely avoided being hit by large sheets of plexiglass. He said it was a very close and scary thing. So now the hotel lobby is open to the elements.

I have to go to Houston next month on business and I have found many of the hotels have closed until further notice.....

I was doing a search of 10 miles around Houston and also did the Galveston area.

It's getting too late tonight, but khou.com has live helicopter shots from Galveston island they are saying they are archiving on their website for people to go through and see their homes, whatever. Right side half way down the screen.

If you have directtv they are running the feed live on 361.

They are all news, no commercials right now. Some of the footage has been amazing. I'm not familiar enough with this area to know what's where, but they are going up and down pointing out this hotel or that one, this landmark, or that one.

I live (almost) within walking distance of the Westchase Hilton. Maybe that part of town didn't get it as bad.

When I called two weeks ago to check the status of my 2-night reservation at the Hampton Inn NASA for Oct 7, I was told the hotel was closed due to damage. I asked to be re-accomodated at a nearby hotel & was told the Hilton Hobby had rooms, but since I was staying on points, nothing was available to me. Later during the same call, the story changed & I was told the Hilton Hobby was closed due to lack of power. I asked to be put on a list to be accommodated when the hotel's power was restored and was told that was not possible. I spent over an hour on the phone and was transferred to four different people, all with varying facts and stories. Imagine my surprise last Tues when I received an e-mail from Hilton re-confirming my reservation! I checked online today and see that my reservation has been cancelled. No e-mail from Hilton regarding the cancellation. I think Hilton has handled my reservation very poorly.

Any recent stays here? How are the Hotel and Galveston?

I stay a cpl times a month. I always get a nice upgrade to tower-nice views. I'm usually welcomed when I arrive. It's a nice property for the price.Only downside is VERY bad roomservice.
