Travel Technology - Orange SIM card (purchased in London): questions about rates

I'm heading to London tomorrow and I'm getting nowhere from the Orange website. I did not buy any plan at all. Just pay as you go and when I get to London, I'll find out the amount I have left on the SIM card.

1. What is the charge per call or per minute if I call a toll-free UK number?

2. What is the charge per call or per minute if I call the US or London?

Thanks.

Charges depend on many options. Orange pricing on *new* pay as you go connections can be found here: http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim/payg_sim

If it's confusing - just deal with it in country. Call orange or walk into a store.

Calling a UK toll-free number of a London number from the UK should be charged at the headline rate as shown in the various tarrifs above. So it shouldn't be more than ~20p / min. Calling the US is likely to be expensive, though Orange may well have international calling plans you can add on which make it reasonably priced. One thing to note: receiving calls should be free.

If you are calling a toll free number try a payphone if at all possible - will save £'s in the long run..

If the sim was purchased a while ago try reading this (http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/payasyougo/old_plans_overview.html) and then this (http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/payasyougo/services_price_guides_overview.html) to help you, I'm not an Orange customer so can't help further sorry.

Oh, (a) I think you should be able to change the tariff to a current one of your choice and, (b) pay as you go SIM cards have a near zero value. Most networks let you get them at zero cost by post with a 1-2 week lead time, and many will have them for free or <$10 in their and sometimes other stores.

Unfortunately, without a UK bank account, your only option is PAYG. It took me a month to get Miss Redbeard's phone set up here. Royal PITA.

Tell me about it. I've been here 3 weeks and I'm still on a PAYG.
At least I just got my bank account today. One baby step at a time.

Assuming value for money is your gripe for being "stuck on pay as you go" - then I think things have moved on. Many pay as you go deals are based around regular top-ups and give you contract like value for money. E.g. have a look at the orange link I gave above, or the t-mobile offers:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/price-plans/pay-as-you-go/

If it's all too confusing online the just use any UK sim you have for the first day or two and then wander into a carphonewarehouse or similar and get advice.
