I read that the role of concierge is unlike their role in the US. What is their role? Would it be inappropriate to ask for help obtaining boarding pass for flight within Australia?

Thanks.

Are you referring to hotel concierges, or the onboard concierges that Air NZ has on selected routes?

I read that the role of concierge is unlike their role in the US. What is their role? Would it be inappropriate to ask for help obtaining boarding pass for flight within Australia? If a hotel conceirge, then yes, it would be inappropriate - the whole point of checking in (and receiving the boarding pass) is to tell the airline that you are at the airport and ready to travel. To get your hotel concierge to do this for you, whilst you are still at the hotel, it a bit OTT, in my opinion, since you aren't at the airport and ready to travel. Having said that though, QF, DJ and JQ allow OLCI, so you can get the boarding passes before going to the airport. I would not ask the concierge to do it though, as you have to answer questions regarding dangerous baggage, and I would not put a third party in the position of answering a question which has legal ramifications for me.

I am not a big fan of checking in and getting boarding passes before arrival at the airport.

But then, I used to work for QF, and have despatched flights, and know what it is like to try and find a missing passenger who has checked in.

Sorry, I am just a worry-wart.

I expect larger hotels would offer the service. With respect to the questions about dangerous luggage and so on, I think it would be reasonable for the concierge to ask you the questions as he or she was checking in for you.

Having said all of that, would getting the concierge to do this not involve you in giving the concierge your booking reference number or e-ticket number (or something similar)? Somehow I wouldn't feel so comfortable doing that.

I suppose I can imagine asking the concierge to do it while I was waiting at the desk, but I wouldn't want to leave the information there and come back and pick up the boarding pass later (especially since, if the pass got lost, I'd need to get a fresh one, which I imagine might require a bit of mucking around). The attraction would be those situations when I didn't have access to a computer or a printer.
