I have a flight booked HKG -> PEK for Friday the 12th and I was wondering what the chances were of me getting a A330 type 2 or 3 config on the flight? My booking says 33R as aircraft but i'm not sure what it means.
help?

thanks

How is the 33A business class seat? I'll be on one next week for the first time.

it's similar pitch vs. 33R (those old ones), but the seats are newer, more comfortable (IMHO), the electric outlets work better, etc.

the only upside of 33R vs. 33A to me is the opportunity to op-up to F on 33R - it happened very frequently for me before during pre-merger time or even last year, but it doesn't happen anymore these days anyway due to the high capacity on PEK/PVG routes and the recent rule mentioned here (i.e. won't take more J pax if they need to upgrade some to F, but would only ask people to pay difference or move to the next flight) - so now for me there's no strong reason to pick 33R anymore.

That sucks... I'm flying with my father and sister and I was hoping to get a personal screen. The only MP member in our group is my dad (gold) so at least we get lounge access. Then again having a PTV is kind of useless to me on this flight... I'll be taking notes for school.

What's the difference in seats b/w 33R and 33A/L? are they basically the same seats (no difference in padding, recline or pitch)?

33R doesn't have personal TV in J, only in F. for 33A/L, I believe both have personal TV.

33L J seats is actually very much like 33R F seats, which are both similar to the now old CX long-haul J seat.

while 33A J vs. 33R J seats have similar pitch (but much less than 33L), I think the 33A J seats are newer, probably can recline a bit more (I haven't flown on one for a while, but if I remember right those 33A J seats give me more a "rotate" feeling instead of just recline - i.e. the whole seat including where you sit got rotated backward and not just the back - but it's just from my very vague memory). 33A seats should be more comfortable, or at least feel much newer.

on a different note - I'm not sure if it's really a problem with the economy or is it because the fares really have been increasing quite a bit these days so affecting demand, or just because there's too much capacity now etc...but a couple of days ago I was again the only one in F on PEK-HKG. I think a year or two ago F is still quite often full - maybe less flights/capacity at that time, or most are J to F upgrades, etc. but I do feel it's much much easier booking HKG-PVG/PEK J/F seats these days vs. a year or two ago. at that time, I almost need to pre-book a few months of HKG-PVG/PEK all the time in order to secure my preferred flight as most flights are J0...but now it's really very easy to book seats on KA on these key routes.

J on HKG-PEK is unpredictable. It is sometimes quite empty, but sometimes very full.

Sorry about not being clear about this earlier:

What's the difference between the Y classes of 33R/A/L?

The Dragonair website has all the details you are probably looking for (PTVs, In-Seat power, pitch, recline).

See here the Aircraft Interior page here: http://www.dragonair.com/da/en_INTL/whatonboard/aircraftinterior/a330_1

Thanks for the insight. I gather from this and earlier posts that you are a heavy user of KA on the mainland routes. There are worse destinies. ;)

I am flying HKG-PEK next week in F, and ALL flights have extremely light load in F. Same in J. I assume that all these flights to PEK are now on 33B??

if you're flying F, I assume you're flying KA and not CX then (as I think CX doesn't offer F HKG-PEK v.v.). and if KA, as mentioned before, they don't really use the code "33B". most KA flights HKG-PEK v.v. are 33R if I remember right.

Just an afterthought on the 33A seat: For tall people, the pitch doesn't feel that generous because of no free space under the seat. Maybe bulkhead row is better. Recline and other seat control functions are plentiful and more than adequate for regional flights.

PTV and tray table are both well thought of and the extra reading light is an additional plus.

How is the pitch on the 33R F seats? Is it worth the extra cost over J?
