The W Maldives is a participating property. Doesn't that property normally run 70K SPG points per night or so? That would be an amazing value for redemption, if weekend rooms could be found during their peak period.

Indeed. Three stays at some cheap hotels in Indonesia/Thailand/wherever and you have two nights at one of the most fabulous resorts in the SPG portfolio.

IF you can find availability.

For last year's similar MasterCard promo the participation and redemption lists were different. The more expensive properties were excluded from the redemption list. Now that the cat is out of the bag I wonder if SPG will exercise their right to the "subject to change without notice" clause.

MasterCard and Starwood launch Complimentary Weekend Promotion in Asia Pacific

Friday, 5 September 2008
MasterCard and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacific have launched a complimentary weekend promotion. The promotion, now in its second year, has been expanded to include an additional 30 hotels and resorts this year. The promotion gives all MasterCard cardholders and Starwood Preferred Guests (SPG) the chance to receive a complimentary weekend stay at Starwood Hotels across Asia Pacific, under the brands Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien, St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, aloft, Four Points by Sheraton and W hotels in established and emerging cities.

Travelers who are not SPG members can also register for the promotion by joining SPG at no cost. MasterCard credit and debit cardholders in Asia Pacific who are Starwood Preferred Guests will receive a complimentary weekend (consecutive Friday and Saturday) stay at any non resort hotel of Starwood Asia Pacific if they have stayed at any Starwood property in Asia Pacific for at least three occasions during the promotional period. This promotion is valid from 1 October until 31 December 2008. Free weekend stays can be redeemed from 1 November 2008 and 31 January 2009.

“We are excited with this great opportunity, in collaboration with MasterCard, to provide our guests with memorable experiences during their travel in Asia Pacific. We want to make an emotional connection with our members that go beyond the world of upgrades and free breakfasts. This promotion allows us to do just that, by presenting them with an opportunity to take a short break during the weekend and visit our properties in Asia Pacific with their loved ones,” said Nelli Yong, Vice President, Brand Management, Asia Pacific, Starwood. “This promotion is a great reason to travel and experience the diverse culture that destinations in Asia Pacific have to offer.”

The promotion was well received last year and destinations which are most popular amongst members taking advantage of their weekend stays included Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul.

To automatically stand a chance to receive a complimentary weekend stay at selected Starwood hotels in Asia Pacific, MasterCard and SPG cardholders must register and make their room reservations via www.SPG.com/mastercardfreeweekend or via the Starwood call center and mention the promotion code 'MFW'.

However Sheraton Zhongshan opening May 1 2009 is beyond the said redemption period. Could it be an error in the T & C as the last LM promotion in which the the last date of redemption is actually 1 year later.

Last year, I spent 3 business trip days in Bangkok jumping back and forth between SGS and Westin on the company tab.
Spent a fantastic free weekend at the St. Regis Beijing as my reward- oh, AND got bumped to a suite as a plat!!
Seriously, this must be the greatest SPG promotion ever. Can't believe they're repeating it.
Imagine if you could stay 3 times at the Four Points in Sticksville, Illinohio and then hit the St. Regis in NYC for a gratis weekend.

I realized I do not have a MasterCard anymore as I cancelled my previous one when they wanted $85/year. There is an offer at aa.com (http://aa.com) to get 25K AA miles ($750 spend in 4 months, new members only but I don't know if that is enforced). I applied for it online and was immediately approved.Congratulations, gfowler-ord-1k. You have been approved for a Citi® Platinum Select® / AAdvantage® World MasterCard®.
Your Welcome Kit and card(s) will arrive in the mail within two weeks at the address you provided. ... If you need a MC for this promo this seems a reasonable way to get one with bonus miles.

This promotion is good competition with Hyatt's Faster Free Nights. Hyatt rates fairly high in Asia and this SPG promotion gives 2 nights on 3 stays compared to Hyatt requiring 4 stays for 2 free nights.

I'll definitely write about the potential value of this promotion on my blog.

I believe there was a similar promo last year for the same region of the world, with a similar short redemption period.

My concern is not the short redemption period but some participating properties can never be redeemed because it will not be opened before the redemption period. Sheraton Zhongshan in China will not be opened before May or June 2009 i.e. at least 4 to 5 months after the redemption period.

yosithezet

Great promo! But does a 'Cash & Points' stay qualify as an eligible stay?

C&P Doesn't count but the various Z*H promos (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/promotions/promo_landing.html?category=GENDRE_H) and Z*R promos (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/promotions/promo_landing.html?category=GENDRE_R) will count.

On thing that FFNs have over this promo is that according to the T&C and noted by the OP we are "Limited to one (1) Free Weekend Award per Starwood Preferred Guest member." So with FFN, 6 stays = 3 nights while this promo 6 stays or 15 stays still will only yield a single 2 night weekend stay.

My challenge with both of these promos is using the free stays rather than earning them. Great promo though! Thanks SPG!

gfowler-ord-1k
Sep 7, 08, 10:20 am
Last years promo had a qualification period of 1 February to 30 April 2007 (3 months) and a redemption period of 2 February to 26 August 2007 (http://www.pata.org/patasite/fileadmin/whatsnew/Starwood_Promotion_Final_.pdf) In reality the redemption was about 6 months because of the way things would post. This year's has a 3 month period for both -- qualify 1 October to 31 December 2008, redeem 1 November 2008 to 31 January 2009. It does make the redemption a little hard -- can you say breakage? But if the timing is right for you like it is for me it is a great deal.

When the Lurkers come to work after the weekend and read this thread I bet there will be lots of internal discussions on how to honor the redemption. I expect Starwood to do the right thing as they have in the past.

Sep 7, 08, 4:44 pm
Last year I missed out because I didn't have a Mastercard.
I'm not letting that happen again, I am filling out an application today (fee free first year).

Hopefully the redeem by January 31 is an error, it does seem a very short timeframe.

Now, if Q4 lives up to expectations, the end of the year is looking very good indeed.

One question about how to best handle this little problem:

If I am only in Asia during the period of this promotion for less than a week (in November) - let's say Nov. 3 to Nov. 9 - and I collect the three stays Nov. 3-4, 4-5 and 5-6, and would like to redeem the award Nov. 7-9 - do you think there is a realistic chance to do this? It's likely that it would take longer for at least one of those stays to post, right?

Any solution for this?

Thanks!!

... If I am only in Asia during the period of this promotion for less than a week (in November) ...I really don't see this happening unless all the stars align perfectly. You could call SPG and see what they can do for you. Maybe with the 3 reservations booked they will book the redemption stay for you -- our Lurkers should be able to comment on this.

My suggested solution -- take a second trip to Asia a few weeks later

Will stays paid partially with a MC work? I have an AMEX corporate card which I have to use for business stays. I could easily pay $1 or some non-reimbursable mini bar expense on my personal MC and the rest on my AMEX. Wonder if this would work?

We'll need the input of the Lurker to know if it is possible, but with the Hyatt FFN what people do is that they book points-based award stays and then when the free nights are earned they call Goldpassport and have the points-based stays converted over to using the free nights instead. So perhaps SPG will let us do the same. Lurkers, any insight as to whether this strategy would be possible?

Usually, it takes up to 72 hours after the qualifying stay is posted to your account for this award to show up on your account for redemption. But, I note here that the T&C's say it can take anywhere from two to four weeks. Then, there is the matter of changing a paid rate to an award rate, which is not always possible.

Any solution for this?

Thanks!!

While not in the T&C's proper for this promotion, it does say "Free weekends can be redeemed at selected Starwood hotels in Asia Pacific between November 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009." <emphasis mine>

So, I think we will probably see an update soon to indicate which hotels are redemption options.

Only paying for the room is going to qualify. Room rental revenue = stay/night credit. Incidental charges do not.

Didn't I answer this in post #34? If I didn't, let me know.

I don't think so.

The scenario:
I today book a points-based award stay for the weekend December 12-13 at Starabulous Resort which is taking part in the redemption part of this promo.

On December 1st my account show that I have earned a free weekend. Can I then call SPG and ask to have that award stay converted to use the free weekend with the award points being restored to my account?

This is the strategy that people use to make sure they can book Hyatt FFNs before they have earned the FFNs. If you wait until the FFN nights are earned you'd never find availability that suits your needs.

This is the strategy that people use to make sure they can book Hyatt FFNs before they have earned the FFNs. If you wait until the FFN nights are earned you'd never find availability that suits your needs.

If you already have an award reservation booked, it should be a simple matter to exchange the award ids and return the Starpoints to your account, so I don't foresee any problems with this as long as the award is available and on your account before your stay begins.

That being said, I think it is a little early to make any assumptions as to which properties in AP are participating in the redemption for this offer.

Is this promo going to be the "Free nights" part of the upcoming "Choice" promo?

If so, registering here might not allow us to make a choice anymore!
I have already registered, but I'd prefer to earn the 100000 points instead...

Then how can we earn a stay credit for this promo with Sheraton Zhongshan in China which will not be opened until May or June 2009. It is listed as one of the Participating Properties.

When the Lurkers come to work after the weekend and read this thread I bet there will be lots of internal discussions on how to honor the redemption. I expect Starwood to do the right thing as they have in the past.

Dear lurkers and experts, I don't think I will have any problem earning the free night... except I would like to make sure that I have correct mastercard to pay for my stays.

Does it have to be a credit card mastercard? I have a debit card that is a mastercard and was wondering if that would do the trick.

Thanks.

Thanks! Great timing for me but that redemption window is TIGHT!!!
AND I hate these types of "cant see em" awards.
Not for everyone. Even if you're going to be there.

Here's how it breaks down for me...

Can split Tokyo Miyako stay with SPG50 at Westin if avail which this all hinges on. Think they take an expired cert off my hands? I'll carry a backup;-)
Then hit for a stay at the SGS to qualify by Oct 13.
Corp MC No Prob.

Will be back in Thailand mid Nov but currently planning a 5th night free award in Hua Hin that I doubled down on because I'm greedy and want my CONFIRMED SUITE AGAIN at this great Cat 3! (Nice run-on Huh ^)
Only 1 other night in Asia confirmed through the redemption period.

So I could spend 14K X 3 Nights for Suites, and then hope they don't force me do downgrade on what happens to be the final two nights of my stay at that this very by the book property...?

Of course this gives me the Option of breaking the direct SFO-NRT-BKK-Hua Hin (by car) at the SGS buffet which may serve my senses better.
9AM Wake up call in BKK or 9:30 in Hua Hin for Breakfast with my Thailand Newbie friend. Daylight drive is definitely better and safer...maybe;)

And to just save 16K or points? Less 2000 SPG Amex points for 3 stays in 3 night the Room and Tax charges and I'm down to a savings of 14K points and no guaranteed suites?

Can I upgrade those Promo's for the standard 7K X 2 nights or 14K points that I've already thrown in the pot and call it even?;)

Suppose it's much better If I move along:rolleyes:

Good luck!

Also, is the free weekend nites using the same inventory as points?

Hi ws8n,

Very good question(s).

I would seriously recommend members to avoid doing that as it would be really a rush. However, if you have no choice but to do it this way, by the third week after your stay is posted to your account and you are not still able to redeem your free weekend night award, do request to contact Corporate Customer service for assistance immediately.

For your last question, I may need you to elaborate further.

"For the MasterCard Asia Pacific award redemption, black out dates do apply. Subject to availability at time of reservation."

Is this the answer you are looking for? Do let me know.

One for the Lurkers,

If a reservation is a "pre-paid" only rate, and the inattentive guest simply clicked his way through the rez process, thereby using his on-file SPG Plat Amex as the Rez guarantee credit card, can the guest pay at the hotel with a MC and earn a stay for this promotion?

If not, is there anyway to salvage or restructure the Rez such that it is paid with a MC?

Thanks in advance.

I guess it would depend on whether or not the hotel has already charged your credit card. If they have, then I think you're done. If not, then you might be able to get them to change it on their end, but that involves a call to them directly.

It would be interesting to know how this is tracked. (Thinking out loud here). I wonder if I were to go and have three coffees at a Sheraton during the promotion period if that were to trigger the promotion. Or perhaps if I were to have stays posted to my account at the same time.

Now that I have thought about it some more...it must be spg that is tracking this. Otherwise MC would have too much information to match up.

Though I think the answer affirms that a Jan 30-Feb 1 redemption is ok, the terms and conditions state that redemption "must be completed by Jan 31". In the above case the stay would be "completed" on February 1. Sorry for being a bit meticulous about it, just clarifying the matter to avoid a potential refusal of a redemption at the last minute due to a front desk interpreting the conditions to the letter. Thanks

Hi milefan,

No worries. It is good to be sure.

Yes we are referring to your check-in dates in this case. As such, your last eligible check-in date for your free weekend award would be Jan 31.

But what happens if you do meet an unlucky situation, call Customer Care immediately for assistance.

Dear Starwood Lurkers:

Can this offer (free weekend stay in Asia Pacific with 3 paid MC stays) work with the various 4th-quarter promos?

Thanks for the clarification!

After finishing 3 stays, will this award be posted directly to my spg.com account? Or will it be mailed to my home address? Thanks.

Hi 747heavy,

Depends on which 4th-quarter promo you are looking into.

If you are referring to the "You Choose" promo, as long as the requirements for both promos are met, your stay should be eligible for participation.

Hi biotite,

The award will be posted to your SPG account around 3 to 4 weeks after your 3rd eligible stay is posted to your account.

No, that is something that you will have to keep track of...as usual. ;)

An important distinction I think is that although it will be 'posted' and SPG CS (I guess) will be able to see it, there is no notification via email or visible in the SPG account to show that it has been earned. Correct?

Hi Yosithezet,

Thanks for your clarification.

Since members would have to call up to redeem the free weekend award stay, they are able to check, at the same time, if the award has been "posted" to your SPG account.

Actually, a better word would be "credited".
(Pardon me. Now I get what the member is asking.)

Dear Thyetus,

Yes, that's what I meant: The Asia Pacific promo (topic of this thread) can be combined with the multiple variations of the "You Choose" promo for this quarter.

Thanks very much!

Has anyone have their award deposit yet?

I know it takes up to three weeks according to T&C, but anyone got faster than that?

Thanks

I think I mucked up my bookings on this offer :(

I've just finished 3 Asia stays in October (paid with Mastercard when I could have had quadruple miles on my Cathay Amex card!) and then spotted that I should have rebooked all my stays after mid-September. They were booked before then. RTFQ as my teachers used to say...

Is there any point begging customer services for their help with this or will this be a waste of time? I'm planning on 4 nights in BKK in a couple of weeks and I can hotel hop to get my 3 stays but this seems a bit painful.

Realise it's all my own fault. If this post achieves nothing else other than reminding people to think about rebooking then that's fine.

every time I call them to redeem, they tell me it's not there yet and need to wait three weeks.

My credit posted within a week after completing the third stay. However, when I called to book the free weekend nights, I was told that it was only valid for one weekend night (as opposed to two). The Plat concierge was able to look up the promo and saw that it's for 2 nights, but mentioned that the credit didn't let her make a 2 night reservation.

Nonetheless, she went ahead and made a 2-night reservation while working to clear up the kinks on her end. I think this would not be an issue, and she would inform me once everything is sorted out.

Hi GIJ,

Members must register no later than December 15, 2008 via our promo website.

As long as conditions for both promos are met, you may combine them.

Has anyone earned the 2 day weekend stay with this promo?

I'm wondering how long it took for it to be available on Starwood's system, in order to redeem.

I'm travelling to Asia for just over 3 weeks, and can knock out the required stays in the first week. But, I'd want to redeem the nights at the end of my stay - 2 weeks later. The t and c's say it will take 2 to 4 weeks to show up. I know that chances will be taken. Just wondering what other's have experienced.

Aloha

I was able to redeem the award by calling the Plat line. However, it did take a while to sort it out, as the agent could not find the promo code which was stated in the T&Cs ...

Will be enjoying two nights in BKK in a fortnight ! :)

Call to redeem.

I was curious to see if it had posted so I emailed CS and asked if the award had posted in my account. It has. Now I need to figure out how/when/where to use it.

Completed my 3rd stay at a Le Meridien Nirwana in Bali (cheap).
The points were posted the following day.
I immediately called to book the St Regis first week of January.

Not only was the Platinum Concierge well informed, the booking took very little time. Saved quite a lot for a hotel I was hoping to visit one day.

did you book the St.Regis in Bali? I don't see it listed in the redeem section. or is it another St.Regir (Sing, China, etc?).
also, does anyone know if you can split the award stay into two separate 1-night stays? I can't do a full weekend, but have a need for two single nights coming up.
thanks!

I wish St Regis Bali was available on this offer... unfortunately it is not.
So I book St Regis Singapore instead.

It took about an hour and two phone calls, but I was able to book the St. Regis SIN as my freebie weekend stay - pretty good deal considering it's about $300 USD per night.

Thanks, Gene, for the head's up, and to Starwood for this promo!

I had trouble booking it as the only "standard" room that was available was an "accessible" room and the system wouldn't accept that as "standard". The plat concierge refused to book but a supervisor called the hotel directly to confirm if it was okay.

Completed my 3rd stay last week. Just booked the Westin Tokyo which is becoming quite pricey given the exchange rate between the JPY and USD :)

"Bookings must be made between September 15, 2008 and December 15, 2008 and stays must be between October 1, 2008, and December 31, 2008." - any idea usually how strict is this "booking made by xxx" rule ? I will have 3 stays before Dec 31 but all of them were booked after Dec 15 (while I did register for the promo before Dec 15). thanks !!

Whenever a book-by date is mentioned for a promotion, my experience has been that it is always enforced.

YMMV.

Just completed my free weekend at the Sheraton Grande BKK.
At first no suite upgrade offered, but as it was my birthday when I checked in I got a Grande Suite room after showing a sad face ... Nice party at Barsu in the hotel that night too, with a birthday cake delivered by the manager !

Thanks again SPG !

(Hotel running at less than 30 % occupancy rate, several floors closed down completely - probably the reason for no suite upgrade offered at first; buffet restaurant closed as well as the Thai restaurant "due to the current situation in BKK")

I think if you check the T&C's of this promotion, you will find that they are non-transferrable, so my answer would be "no", if that does indeed prove to be the case.

But, honestly...Thyetus probably knows this promotion more intimately than I do. ;)
