Hilton HHonors - HHonors Million Miles Promotion: United States Only

I did a search that came up without anything that looked like this promotion. But if anyone finds a thread that matches this, please feel free to delete/merge threads.

A co-worker just came in my office and asked if I had registered for the Hilton/National Million Miles promotion. I hadn't heard of it. So she told me how she found it, and sure enough, here it is:

http://www.5millionreasons.com/index2.html

"Book a Hilton Family hotel stay at HiltonHHonors.com or rent a car from National Car Rental at nationalcar.com between September 1 and November 30, 2008. Complete your stay or rental by December 15, 2008, and you’ll automatically be entered in the drawing to win one of five grand prizes of one million HHonors bonus points.†"

You do need to register, and there's a button to do that from the link above (bottom right).

I registered, though the odds of winning are probably astronomical!

The contest rules state you can register online for the promotion up to two times per day through November 30. Earn 174 entries by starting today and diligently reregistering for the next 86 days without spending a penny.

I wrote about this sweepstakes today on my blog.

Your chances of not winning are zero if you do not register. If you register, they must be at least slightly better than zero. ;)

Thanks for the heads up.

There is, BTW, a Travel Sweepstakes forum under Travel & Dining.

As to zero, you can't win if you don't play. As someone who has won a trip to Paris from our PBS station, 2 AA tickets in the US from Nissan, and a trip to San Fran. from Starwood, I'll be playing.

So, thanks, to any of you who don't want to play -- improves my odds!!

Now that's an interesting spin on increasing the odds (ever so slightly)!

I opened the thread thinking hilton finally put a promo out... But I guess the marketing budget all went to olympics ads.

And you know what can really increase the winning odds? Other chains!

Hyatt: FFN
SPG: smth meaningful TBA this month
MR: Megabonus
IC: quarterly promos

HH: sweepstakes?!...

...but you're only entered when you book & stay (or drive I guess). Why would multiple registrations matter much?

Yes, but your chances of winning are statistically equivalent (assuming that the number of entries is in the millions or higher) regardless of whether or not you register!

I like how it started on September 1st, but I just received this email today (September 12th).

I tried to go to both links, but both are timing out or not working

+1

When the site does come up, it's painfully slow and none of the images display properly. Then it crashes.

I guess it does improve the odds for the ones who have been able to register. :D

I wonder how they might want to compensate those of us who might very well have won, but were unable to register, after trying to in good faith. Very frustrating.

I called the diamond desk because I have a stay starting tomorrow and I want my shot at a million points, dam*it!

Anyway, she seemed aware that there was a problem, put me on hold for about five minutes, came back and told me she needed more time to work on it and would send me an email in an hour. That was about 30 mins ago. I'll update this post if/when I get the email.

I may be very wrong and please correct me if I am, but if you can't get the registration page to load, you can register from the link that's in the very first post. I think that will still register you for the promotion.

I had a friend who won a tonne of points once and had to pay thousands of dollars in taxes on it. They issue a 1099 for about 1.5-2 cents per mile....thats a 20,000 to 15,000 addition to your taxes. Do the math to see if it is really worth it.

Lets say you use them for a 30K room night (Which is not that great a hotel) - and say the room would cost you $200 a night to buy outright. That's about $6500 if you paid for itself...and the tax on 20K may be more than that.

I don't think its that great a prize after the IRS gets their hands on it!! Especially as you would EARN points on rooms if you paid for itself.

Terms and conditions say winner will receive a 1099 for the "valuation" of the points at $10,000.00

The way I read the T&C, it seems u can just rent car from National to have an entry; only if u want the 250 HH bonus pnts that you must rent in conjunction w/stay. Reason I'm asking as planning on several rentals during National's 1-2 Free promotion and tying that in w/n'west's mountain of miles promo for NW miles.

Only open to US residents ...

It would be helpful if the poster initiating a new topic on the very infrequent Hilton promotions indicated the eligibility in the title of the thread. Just add "US only" or "Hilton Amex only" or whatever the major limitation is.

It would reduce the frustration for those of us who hold out a glimmer of hope for being able to take advantage of whatever scrap HHonors is throwing our way.

I edited my OP, but it only changed the small subject line just above it. I've PM'd one of the mods asking for help in this.

Thanks! I was thinking more about future promotions that may eventually come along. As the chances of winning this one are extremely slim (and zero for me) I wasn't too upset about this one. I still hold out hope for Hilton to surprise us with something to really get excited about, but I'm definitely NOT holding my breath.

Minor, but I'd call this more of a sweepstakes, than a promotion. Promotions give me something guaranteed for stays/nights.
