Hi All,

My upcoming trip back to Thailand will be my first Cathay flight!
I have a few questions if anyone would mind helping me out..

I am flying JFK/HKG/BKK (90 minute layover in Hong Kong), I'm one of those people that HATES checking bags (I travel pretty lightly with one medium rolling suitcases)... it looks as though on the 773's the overheads are pretty tight in Y. will I be forced to check my bag? and if so what are the odds of it actually making it with me to Bangkok? Any good seat suggestions?

and...

on the way home I am flying from HKT on TG to BKK to pickup my CX flight home (I have a 3 hour layover so not really concerned about time) I'm not really worried about my luggage since I know I can carry it on for sure on for the TG flight. Once I arrive in Bangkok can I just go to a transfer desk to get boarding passes or will I have to exit and check in at the Cathay desks outside of security?

Any other tips you may have I'd be happy to hear!

Thanks!

Clem

I used to hate to checked luggage. In fact, I still hate doing that, but I am getting used to it now - as I found out that I also hate hauling my carry-ons from a terminal to another or even from one-end of a terminal to another end.

You may need to get to CX's web page to see your intended carry-on fits the quantity, size and weight requirements. CX, and from time to time, foreign airports such as HKIA, can be very strict in enforcing the rules, but I do not know how CX is at JFK.

In regards to overhead cabin size, it is very limited. My family was in J HKG-SFO (and that was a 74A) several weeks ago, and the passenger across from the aisle had two bags and ended up putting one in the overhead bin above my seat. If we had one more carry-on, that would be a problem. You can imagine how it is like in Y.

I, also, hate to check bags through connections. However, having connected at HKIA, on average, every other month for the past three years, they have never lost or misconnected my bag. (All but one of these connections have been online CX connections. The other one was a BA to CX connection.) HKIA is on the small list of airports I trust to check bags through for connections.

As you said, you travel very lightly... If your bags satisfied the size and weight restrictions, then CX has no reason to "force" you to check in the bags...

I've checked the Cathay website for the size limit of carry-ons and my bag is definitely larger than the limit, but I'm sure that the bag is also larger than the limit of the other airlines I've carried it on with no problems too. I guess I will just hope for the best.

* You can ask the check-in agents.
* Bear in mind that you must not leave airside in HKIA. Otherwise you may not be able to get back in with your bag.
* I did transit HKG before, but I do not know if the transit security stops passengers with large carry-ons. I suppose not - at least I have not seen they stopping people because of laggage sizes.

Best of luck!

There's not much overhead cabin space in Y.
Having travelled with CX for the last 9 years, I have never had problems with my baggage getting lost on connection; on my June trip to Asia, my connection time was 50 minutes in HK, CX was still able to get my luggage to travel with me to my final destination, to my surprise.

Caveat: There were two occasions that my luggage missed the flight but they were delivered to me on the same evening or the next day.
