Will soon have my first LHR transfer after BA European flights switched from T1 to T5.

Anyone in the know how long the transit currently takes? Is it considerably slower if I go landside to the AA Arrivals lounge first? Is there a train connection landside between T3 and T5 landside or a shuttle bus?

How long before boarding should one reasonably be at security and at the gate in T5?

Sorry for the numerous questions. If someone has a link to an existing thread then please do share.

Three weeks ago, I transited from T5 to T3, BA-CX connection (ARN-xLHR-HKG). Airside connection via a bus was smooth.
For landside transfer from T3 to T5, you can use free Heathrow Express ride from Heathrow Central(T1,T2,T3) to T5. HEX operates every 15 min.

BA forum sticky (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=762919)
has some info which covers transfers between terminals (See #5).

Forget about the OLD LHR Landside Trick....The new T3-T5 is fast and much more efficient. The BA Lounges/Galleries at T5 are light years ahead of AA Arrivals..Try it you might be surprised.

A belated thanks to you both. I'm just quite impressed by the AA showers, which at 7am after a longhaul are the most important part of a lounge for myself.

Actually the T5 BA Galleries Elmis Showers are not bad and you get better toiletries than AA'a arrival lounge. Also the breakfast spread at the BA lounge should be better.

Thanks. Probably will not have time for either lounge in the end but will keep that in mind.

I just did CX into LHR T3 to BA at T5. I was in T5 within 15 min of the aircraft door being opened. Walked straight onto the bus at T3 and it was a 10 min ride with a most annoying video explaining how to put gells + liquids into a resealable bag -- and not to be worried about anything .

The delay came with going through very thorough security at T5. And I learnt not to take the tray off the belt after the x-ray...

A critical part of transferring to T5 is the requirement that you have presented yourself at the security checkpoint to have your boarding pass scanned at least 35 minutes prior to departure.

There are no exceptions to this rule. You will not be permitted past security into T5 if your scheduled departure time is < 35 minutes.
