I was wondering if hobart could get international flights to and from NZ eg HBA- AKL or HBA- CHC. Does Air New Zealand have any plans to expand to Hobart in the future? If not why? If you think it could work what aircraft? and how many times a week?

Thanks

IIRC NZ used to fly HBA-CHC.

They did fly CHC - HBA, starting in 1983, finishing early 90s. Some summers it went twice a week. (see here (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/aboutus/corporateprofile/companyhistory/default.htm#history)for details).

737-200 all the way. Perhaps it switched to 737-300 at some point, but I only ever flew it on the -200.

I think it's safe to say that this kind of route is gone and (never?) coming back. For most people the transit via Melbourne provides options everyday that more than make up for the extra travel time.

Totally agree but it would be nice to have a * domestic carrier in Oz that one could use.

Yes, I agree. I continually grizzle at not having a * for the Eastern seaboard, and internally to Perth :td:

Back in the 80's when this route was flown - both NZ and Trans Australia Airlines operated the service.

It started as a TAA flown route with a QANTAS flight number, this was just after QF had given up its last 707 and become (for a few years) the only airline in the world to have just the 747.

Ansett and TAA both flew the route in the early '80s, but Ansett pulled out in 1982, and I think that's when NZ started their flight.

TAA (by then Australian Airlines) pulled out in 1987.

727 by both airlines I think.

This book gives a history of the Ansett/TAA operation on the route. (http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=0TCnnCp6BKMC)
