I will be in Australia for the first 2 weeks of September, flying into and out of Adelaide to visit a friend. During that time I have about 6 days of time on my own, when I would like to see Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef. From what I've read in the other thread on here about the GBR, the best way to see it for the first time is via Cairns, which is what I'm planning. Being a recent college grad, I don't have a ton of money to spend, so I'm basically looking at a day trip out to see the reef. Not being dive certified, I'll be happy to snorkel around and just explore. Some tour/direction would definitely be helpful, but again, I'm looking for a budget option.

The best I've found appears to be something called a "Compass Cruise" (http://www.compasscruises.com.au/), which is $60 + $20 in fees. I've tried to do as much research as possible, but it'd be great if anyone knew of any other options. I'd love to possibly do 2 days there, but it doesn't seem like there are any deals for 2 single day trips (i.e. savings off of booking them separately). I will likely just be staying somewhere simple and cheap in Cairns - a 2 day, 1 night trip on the reef would be amazing, but is unfortunately too expensive for me right now. Any thoughts?

Cairns is very popular with backpackers visiting Australia, so there are plenty of cheap options for accommodation and tourist things. You will want to stay somewhere in Cairns City (close to The Esplanade) and they will be able to answer all your questions and help you with planning something within your budget. There are also tour desks along The Esplanade which are more than happy to talk to you and explain all the options. There will be something available for the budget you have - but of course you can't have the best of everything if your budget is tight. You should be okay to book when you get there. There is more to Cairns than just the reef - you can go to the rainforest, tablelands, beaches and also there are action/adventure day tours.
