I've been on this site a few times, but never joined, until today. Friday night, 8-22-08, I was on American 1525, their non-stop from MIA to LAS. The flight was late getting out, although, there was severe weather in South Florida earlier in the day, from "feeder bands" related to Tropical Storm Fay.
We pushed from the gate, taxi out, and the pilot came on the PA said they were still waiting for their weight figures. There was some delay in getting them, and then he makes another announcement, basically saying that the First Officer had been on duty since 10 AM, and it now would be illegal for him to continue on this flight. He further explained that they were calling back to their company to find a reserve FirstOff. We got back to the gate, and the gate agent said the flight had been canceled.
Everybody is inconvenienced in these situations - that is understood here, however, while we were taxiing back to the gate, I heard quite a few passengers making idiotic comments. 2 rows behind me, I hear one man criticizing the pilot for not having a calculator??? What? He never said anything about a calculator. The passenger next to me was drunk, and he definitely knew better how to run American (worked in aiport administration whatever that is), and so on.
As I deplaned, one of the stewardesses apologized to me. It was very unexpected, but very much appreciated. Just as I exited the airplane onto the bridge, some passenger was shouting profanities towards the Captain. I thanked the Captain. I assume that the captain and his crew did everything they could. Wasn't his fault that they were delayed. Not his fault the cargo and passenger bags weren't weighed and figures provided sooner. Not his fault there wasn't a spare pilot to replace our copilot. I don't know, maybe we should blame Tropical Storm Fay on him, our American Airlines.
This flight was canceled, so there is no report here, just my observations that some of these passengers are real PITAs.
