MilesBuzz! - Credit Card Warranties: Do They Apply to Home Improvement?

I'm spending a few grand getting my HVAC system zoned.

Can't put it on Amex, but anything else okay.

Question: Does the typical "warranty extension" feature cover things like home improvement?

Hope I don't have to read/interpret the fine print.

I've got Discover, Chase, US Airways Mastercard, others.

Of course, I'd also like to get miles or points, but warranty extension, if available, is paramount.

The Honeywell unit comes with a four-year warranty on the panel, one year on the dampers.

Thanks -

You need to call the warranty number for your specific card (avail. from the CS #) and get the written pamphlet that details exactly what coverage you have for your card. That is the only was to succeed at this. If everything is in order when it comes to the claim, they will pay out....but there are many exclusions.

My Visa Signature guide to benefits excludes from the extended warranty, "real estate and items which are intended to become part of real estate." (Emphasis added.) I think that that exclusion is fairly common.

Excluded on mine as well, but I spend $350 a year for a home warranty that covers all equipment (no matter how aged).

BidKat: See if you can get the HVAC installer to warranty them. I got my contractor to do a 10 year parts & labor on the whole system, and it was quite an intricate custom-modified install.

My Visa Sig warranty also has the same exclusions as guv1976's, but with 1.5% cash back on that card, it was well worth putting the entire job on there.

icurhere2: beware of the home warranty co's... they hire the cheapest contractors available, which often means shoddy work. My next-door neighbor has a home warranty that he renews each year and thinks it's great. He's now paying 2-3x more in electric bills due to the way they botched his AC, but he thinks it's a "great deal!" Guess many non-business people don't factor in total cost of ownership.

while not part of the original question, be sure to check with your contractor and your state on whether any HVAC improvements will give you a rebate. If a system reaches a certain efficiency, you may be able to apply to get something back on it. Generally these are for new gas systems but you never know. I cannot find a link but this is something worth looking into. I too am thinking of doing two zones so we can use our pellet stove downstairs while the kids sleep upstairs on oil heat. With one zone it cannot be done so we waste money on huge oil bills. It may now be worth spending the $thousands to change all that/

And yes I too will go for miles.

Here is small-town TN, the warranty company contracts with the major HVAC and major plumbing companies I would otherwise use - through my realtor, I was able to speak to others who have the same warranty firm first (also recommended as a step for others).

one could also go solar to reduce electric bills. I work in this biz.
