Budget Travel - Reconfirming flights?

I have a couple of LCC flights in Europe coming up in October. While I have the confirmations in hand, I seem to remember some horror stories to the effect that, if you didn't call them the night before to re-confirm your flight, they would cancel your reservation.
Is any of this true?
BTW, the LCC's are FlyBe and EasyJet.

Completely untrue.
You don't need to re-confirm flights with either Easyjet or Flybe.

On the other hand, DO confirm your flight times and status online a few days before departure. Especially FlyBe is notorious for delays, cancellations and weird schedule changes on some of their more established routes (where they don't face any competition). Technically they should notify you (via email), but this might not always happen.
