MilesBuzz! - Accruing Miles from Award Ticket

A couple years ago, the award flight I was on with one airline had trouble so they had to rebook me with another airline at the airport. When they did, I gave my frequent flier # to the airline on whose metal I was flying, and got the miles for the flight. I guessed that maybe when airline A issues you a new ticket on airline B, airline B no longer knows that originally it was a non-revenue ticket. But I thought maybe it was just an anomaly.

Anyway just got back from another trip on which the same thing happened, and I got the miles in this case too. Nice to get some extra miles on a ticket obtained with miles, especially in these days of ever-increasing fees and restrictions on award travel.

I've had this happen before on award re-accommodations - if it were a paid flight, you can ask Airline A to give miles on the initial routing (they know you booked the flight on them out of loyalty).

In ye olde days, HP used to give miles on award tickets as standard practice; many people had some interesting routings as a result.

This happens a lot during reaccommodations. It's easier for them to rebook you in a non-restricted class (full F/J/Y) which also happens to earn miles. Otherwise, they have to override availability in your original booking class (as that bucket is probably zero at that time).

Back in the "really" old days (20 years ago), I took a first class trip on Pan Am from JFK to Kenya. At the time there was a triple miles promotion and, yes, I got triple miles with first class bonus for my trip. I called it the perpetual frequent flyer award.

this happened to me a couple of months ago. booked an award ticket with DL...return flight was on NW. i missed my return flight, and showed up to the airport a couple of hours late. i eventually got on another NW flight (after being on standby for a couple of flights). and when i got home, i noticed that i earned miles for that flight. ^

I had this happen to me last month on a paid ticket. I missed my original flight(booked in K) and they rebooked me in Y, got a nice little 50% bonus out of the deal.
