Hertz - Is it possible to add additional driver in the middle of the rental period?

I have to rent a SUV for a week for the trip tomorrow. Actually i feel like driving thoughout the national park would be good since I kinda enjoy driving. The only issue is my return flight is about 4 hrs earlier than my friends', and I would like them to return the car for me, also they like to tour around a bit while I'm gone.

Is it possible to add an additional driver for the only the last day or I have to add it before picking up the car?

Thanks.

It should be possible. One caveat though is that both of you, the initial renter and the person you want to add as the additional driver, should be present at one of Hertz location (does not have to be the one you rented or will be returning) to present licences and sign documents.

Hertz.com FAQ should have an entry regarding this.

It depends how risk averse you are -- they don't check identification upon return so unless they got into an accident in those 4 hours, there shouldn't be anything to really worry about.

Yes, you can add an additional driver during the rental and be charged for the number of days the additional driver endorsement is in effect.

I have a similar question.

I have an upcoming rental that has me picking up a car in Arizona, driving to California for a few days and then driving home and returning the car to the same Arizona location that I pick it up from.

Hertz's website says:
Additional Authorized Operators Fees
USD 13.00 per day, maximum USD 65.00 per rental, for each Additional Authorized Operator.

Exceptions -
California - no fee for Additional Authorized Operators

There are 3 of us going on this little road trip. Based on Hertz's additional driver rules, could I do all of the driving to California, and then add a couple of additional drivers (for free due to being in California) for the ride home?

That's a major risk and not worth it imo. I know in B.C. the liability insurance on all rentals in the province (government insurer) is invalidated if the rental agreement is violated, including allowing unauthorized drivers to use the vehicle. Same with credit card insurance, at least mine anyways. It's not worth the risk of thousands of dollars to dodge a $13 fee.

I'm going to guess no as it's probably based on where you initiated the contract. When you sign at Location A, you agree to Location A's fees and taxes. To avoid the additional driver fees you'd have to close the contract in California and open a new one for the ride back, thus incurring one-way rates.

Sorry to be the bringer of doom and despair to both these posters but I just thought I'd help :p
