Budget Travel - Supermarkets in Airports - do you know any ?

Dear Fellow FTers,

On a recent trip, I had a four-hour layover at Frankfurt Airport and had no choice but to have lunch at the airport. No Star Alliance lounge for me... ;)

All the places serving food seemed horrendously expensive - and the food sometimes not looking that great. Looking further, I found a really nice supermarket inside the airport, hidden in the basement, unadvertised as if to avoid unfair competition with all the restaurants above (the customers seemed to be all airport staff). Large selection of fresh salads, deli, fruits and vegatables, drinks, deserts, cereals, coffee... Anything you could ask for, at supermarket price. Napkins and plastic forks / knives at the registers - in short, a dream place for the hungry traveller on a budget. :-:

I thought I would post the tip here, and ask if you know of any similar place in any other airport ?

Cheers,

J-

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has a wonderful grocery store that I have used many times. It is in the main commercial area near the escalators that go down to the train platforms. It is NOT airside.

There's a Migros supermarket at the other end of the rail station concourse at GVA. Even open on Sundays, thereby attracting large numbers of Geneva shoppers.

I remember there was some sort of deli like store in Schipol last time I flew there that was airside. I got some lovely cheese. It has beena couple of years since I flew through Schipol though.

Marks & Spencer Simply Food - Landside at South Terminal LGW. (Not sure about North Terminal, but you can easily go to/from South on the shuttle train.)

In Munich (MUC) there is one on the open air plaza above the train station (landside). Sorry, but I don’t remember the name…

Wow, I remember seeing quite a few, but as to which particular airports they were...

I think I saw one on the lower level at IST.

This is a great idea for a thread! Here are a few:

VIE has a Billa supermarket one level below the main arrival hall, underneath the McDonald's. You pass it on the way to/from the commuter train station.

DUB has a Spar on the ground floor of the parking hall directly across the road from arrivals. The one you need to go through when accessing the hotel shuttles.

MAD T4 has an "airport market" shop on the far left (when exiting the baggage hall) side of the arrivals floor, prices here however are not regular supermarket prices.

TLL is situated right next to the "Ülemiste" mall, around a 500 metre walk away. It has, among other things, a very well stocked, huge Rimi supermarket.

CPH - there is a Netto supermarket some 700 metres from the T3 entrance/exit, walk right from the T3 exit towards the road leading to the Oresund bridge along the road and it is there next to the petrol station (Shell?). If the supermarket is not open the petrol station is and does have a decent selection of snacks and drinks at decent (for Denmark) prices as well.

HEL has a small kiosk/minimarket kind of thingy on the basement, one level below the arrivals level. Take the escalator from the area between arrivals 2 & 3 down towards the cafeteria & walk past the Scandic hotel reception.

All of these are landside if not obvious from the descriptions.

Amsterdam Schiphol actually has two in the plaza area above the train station (but still in the airport).

AH To Go (opposite Starbcuks) selling a reduced selection of what is normally stocked in their regular markets and O'Lacy's (opposite Burger King) does a full selection plus international fayre.

Hema (also near Starbucks) sells a few food products as well, so you could call it three!

They cater to the airport workers as well as the tourists....

There's a very adequate Delvita supermarket in the PRG airport complex, in the office block behind the Marriott Courtyard hotel.
If you can't be arsed to DIY your food, the same building offers a very nice Italian cafe plus a self-service restaurant, both charging LOCAL prices...
In fact, during long layovers, I forego lounge access and just go across to the cafe, because the coffee's better and the setting more tranquil...

The supermarket at MUC is an EDEKA. And a quite good one at that. And open on Sundays, which is very rare in Germany.

ZRH has a big supermarket, next to the airport train station.

It's a Migros (at least it was) and it's one floor up from the tracks.

Not at FCO, but there is one in the basement of Termini after you get into Rome via the Leonardo Express.

But it's good to know if I need anything.

I sort of like the ABC stores....

Now, I think I need to rent a car. Any advice?

The supermarket at MUC is an EDEKA. And a quite good one at that. And open on Sundays, which is very rare in Germany. And they stock items (low-sugar snacks, etc) for diabetics, something very rare in any airport worldwide.

All the big UK airports seem to have a Boots. They sell beauty products, cameras and accessories and usually have a pharmacy. They do food, at great value. Salad or sandwich, plus drink (inc. more expensive brands like Innocent Smoothies) and fruit or yogurt or cake or desert for £3.75.
