Hertz - Recent rental issue and resolution

I'll be as brief as possible, I'm just hoping for some feedback. What could have easily resulted in 5 fatalities, ends with a $200 voucher for future rental.
Booked SUV with Hertz @ PHX airport for 4 days.

Vehicle #1 - GMC Acadia with 26K miles, black interior carpets clearly not vacuumed, snack packages/wrappers in rear seat areas. Frontend vibration/noise increased quickly into our long drive (PHX-FLG). After driving 75 mph for over an hour on the interstate we were in a remote location. The vibration/noise was so bad that I put the window down, stuck my head out the window, only to see the front wheel wobbling excessively. We identified two missing lug nuts (studs sheared off) and the remaining four were a few hand turns from releasing. Was able to use the lug wrench to tighten and make it to nearest town. Roadside Assistance unable to reach us for 2-3 hrs so we drove slow and made it to FLG 1.5 hrs later. Smooth exchange, no compensation offered, no time to debate the issue.

Vehicle #2 - Chevrolet Uplander with 29K miles, dirty interior, and a frontend shimmy that shook the Neverlost unit violently. No arm rests for rear bucket seat occupants. Left turn signal and right headlight out. Exchanged in PHX on day 3 when the rear air conditioning stopped blowing.

Station Manager apologized, provided $100 voucher for future rental, and allowed us to return next vehicle without refueling (we ended up only driving 70 miles).

Vehicle #3 - Ford Explorer with 10K miles, with smoky interior. Even found a full pack of smokes under the seat of this "nonsmoking" vehicle. A previous renter even put a nice collection of several large boogers above the driver window.

I documented this in greater detail and sent to Hertz Customer Relations. Got a response today and though I stated the $100 voucher is worthless to me, they provided me a second one. I was hoping for something like a free 3-day rental. I do not want to rent from Hertz again, but these vouchers obligate me to do that and possibly even give them additional funds should I surpass $200. They could not comp my rental due to booking/paying via third party travel site. Thoughts?

Are the vouchers transferable? The last two 100$ vouchers I got from Hertz were.

Management at PHX was VERY helpful and VERY nice to me following an ugly experience with a vehicle - unfortunately, they treated me great on SUBSEQUENT rentals, I never received vouchers, etc, but I rented 4 other times after the incident and received great (and I mean great) cars. I dont know what you're looking for, but 200 bucks sounds like a decent deal when, in your own words, you're looking for 3 free days. I did contact management (all the way to regional level), and got a response from PHX management next day.

Once agian Hertz and the old car issue comes up again!

I would email/write to the local paper with photos (if you have any) of the missing lug nuts (studs sheared off). That is a serious issue and one you shouldn't have to worry about when renting a car

I have lost track now of the number of cars that I get with front end shudders because the wheels need balancing. The problem is you only normally pick this up when on a Highway going 50mph or above.

I now make a habbit if I have any long drives ahead to find an open bit of road close to the Hertz location, get the car up to 60mph and see if it shudders.

If it does straight back and demand the car be swapped for something else!

I have alot of $40 vouchers as compensation.

$200 is OKAY but it's just a band-aid for the deeper problems with Hertz over the past 12-18 months of many cars with over 25,000miles on them which are dirty & not maintained.

Used to be good when Ford owned them! Problem is no other rental agency is as big or has a diverse fleet as Hertz. As a result Hertz can allow standards to drop and still be number 1 :td:

Getting cars with 20-30K on them seems par for the course these days. You'd expect more from the company which probably charges among the highest rates. I assume this is all fallout from the leveraged buyout. Suck the victim company dry - maximize profit (by paying yourself big dividends) while running the brand name into the ground, then exit.

I assure you that I'm not just asking for a free 3-day rental. There are some bells and whistles needed. I just threw that out in my postings here as an example.

As for contacting the Arizona Republic (PHX newspaper), that is a great idea and I will do that. I did take pictures of the wheel in great detail.

Just yesterday, I sent a reply to the Hertz reply indicating my disapproval. My experiences are under review again, and I'm awaiting follow-up. Fortunate for Hertz, I'm easy going. I just want a worthy response to validate our travel experiences. It seems so obvious that if someone calls in need of exhanging a vehicle that you would prep the next vehicle or offer something better than what they have. And if a second exchange is needed, I would hope the red carpet is rolled out.

update: got my second response from hertz. this time they've asked me to mail back the certificates i received and they would credit my card.

seriously?! what have i missed? how about crediting my card and allowing me to keep the certificates. why is it so difficult to get valid resolve to this situation.

But you said the certificates are worthless to you, so why is this a problem?

$200 in vouchers is worthless to me because i cannot rent a vehicle for less than that. this forces me to financially support hertz which i'd rather not do. why can't compensation simply be "the next one is on us."
also, i did not pay for the rental, so refunding a third party does nothing for me, the person who endured all the frustrations.

Well, you have a weirdo unique situation. You could have asked for ZE1 award points instead if you wanted a free future rental.
