I'm planning a trip to drive from SFO-LAX on the PCH for a week or so in 2009. What time of year is best for that, taking into consideration weather and crowds? I'm thinking April or May, but would be open to other months if they're better.

Less chance of fog in the fall versus the spring. I'd go after school started instead of before it let out.

^ September & October are likely your best bets for least fog, least rain, best weather for the whole of the route from SFO to LAX. ^

Thanks for the advice! Looks like we'll push the trip back to early autumn. :)

If you really want to go earlier in the year, April or early May would also be a good choice. Maybe just a bit more chance of weather or fog but the iceplant and other flowering plants will be blossomed out. Very pretty.

Just avoid late May through early September when school is out and everyplace is overrun.

my vote is with early- to mid-November. as many of the others know the real fall weather in that part of the state doesn't really hit until late Oct. Leaves really start chenging then, the air gets crisper, etc. I've run into some major hot weather fairly regularly in early-mid Oct in SF. anyway, that's my 2 c...
