I will be renting a car in Calgary for over 2 weeks. During that time we will be driving down into Montana for a few days, back across the border and then driving around the Canadian Rockies.

My questions:
1. Somewhere I thought I read that I will need a special insurance card issued by my U.S. insurance company. Does anyone know if this is true?

2. Are there any special requirements for driving a Canadian rental car into the U.S. and back across the border. According to Hertz, they have no restrictions. Just want to know if any has had experience doing this and had any issues.

It'll be handy in case of accidents or if you are stopped by the police. Generally not an issue when crossing borders.

If it's o.k. with Hertz, you're fine. No problems (generally) with the border officials.

In Canada, all vehicles must carry proof of insurance. The rental cars will have one (Hertz's insurance in this case). If you were to drive your own car across the border into Canada, you would need this special insurance card from your insurance company.

This should not be an issue. The only issue is if you are a Canadian citizen, who cannot drive a US registered car into Canada. He/she can, though, drive it in Canada and back into the USA.
