Just picked up a new iPhone 3G and have been playing around with it for a day though I am wondering what everyone's favorite applications are for their iPhone or iPod touch.
Haven't tried to actually buy an app yet since I don't like how there is no demo and you have to commit before you buy it. Though maybe something will come highly recommended.

Got mine yesterday (had a Gen1 but it broke before the apps were available), and I also downloaded a bunch of goodies (all freebies for now) to play with.
So far I am most impressed with Remote, eBay, AIM and the MySpace apps. Tried a couple of the free weather apps and wasn't too impressed.
I haven't tried any games yet, although that will come before my next travels if not sooner.
I really am impressed with how these all function, and this is only the beginning! :)
Just downloaded Shazam. Awesome. For those who aren't familiar with it, you can let Shazam "listen" to a song and it'll figure out what song it is.

Urbanscoop is hit or miss, I might say, but the first time I used it, we went to a Japanese restaurant it suggested and had a great meal. The next time, Jamba Juice popped up.
My favorite app so far, and I'm sure there must be more like it, is "Save Benjis." You can enter a upc code from any product and it will search the web to find out what it's going for online. Helpful for larger purchases. It can search by manufacturer, model number also. It doesn't scan the barcode, though, you have to enter it manually but still a very helpful, free program.
I also like Shakespeare, which is the complete folio in one tiny (again free) program, even the sonnets. Nothing like trying to win an argument by quoting Shakespeare!

The ones I have installed (all free) are:
Bible - great for searching for verses
BoxOffice - great for finding showtimes near you
Facebook - not that useful
Travelocity - nice app, lets you see flight times, schedules, and security wait times
LocalPicks - TripAdvisor app to find good restaurants near you.
Google - Not that great, but quick access to lots of Google sites.
BookSearch - Price comparison for books.
Cellfire - Coupons for nearby stores (not much selection, though)
Shazam - Identify songs.
Flashlight - Use your iPhone as a flashlight.

Remote - "it just works"
Facebook - only some features, the webapp has the rest
Myspace - better than the web version!!!
Shazam - I don't think people realize just how amazing this is. There will be probably be legal issues with this in the future...
Bloomberg - best designed app so far, incorporating accelerometer. When you rotate, it goes to a full screen chart
Jamd - photo stack feature utilizes multitouch well
Cube Runner - best free game

There won't be legal issues with Shazam; it's using the licensed Gracenote database. It's also identical to the "Track ID" service that has been included with Sony Ericsson phones for a couple of years now.
I'm pretty disappointed with most of the apps so far. In fact, I think I'd rather go back to the stuff I had on Installer.
Pandora - Sorry, doesn't work in your country.
Last.fm - crashes every time
Hotels.com - LAME, just launches their (non-iphone) web site for the country you're in
TripAdvisor - horrible UI, clunky, odd recommendations
Facebook - OK, but not appreciably different than their excellent web-based iphone app
I miss my Converter, Taskbar Notifier, and location-based apps from Installer.

TripAdvisor - horrible UI, clunky, odd recommendationsAnother thing about the TripAdvisor app: I've noticed that every time you load it, it uses the previous location. For instance, I used it several times at home when I first installed it. It did have one suggestion that looked interesting, which I hope to check out soon. Then I used it near the airport (about 20 miles away) and it had the same suggestions. I tried it again and it had ones near the airport. Then I tried it again on the way home and it had the airport suggestions still. I tried again and it was nearby ones. Now, I'm in Chicago for a few days and I tried it again. It suggested places near my house. Tried again and it listed nearby ones. Workaround: Load it twice anytime you want local suggestions. Anyone know who to contact at TripAdvisor to let them know about the bug? I searched and couldn't find anything.
I agree, though, that the UI could use some work. Give us the ability to choose a location or use our current location. Let us refine results based a price range (not just a filter for a maximum price), location and cuisine. Might be tough, though, since price and cuisine data is missing for many restaurants.
Another interesting app I just discovered:
PageOnce - Gives you quick summary information for tons of finance and travel sites.

It would be great if there were an app that would make reading vBulletin forums (like FT) as easy as reading email. Ideally, it should take into consideration the multitude of ways that people read forums (keeping up with everything through the New Posts link, just checking New Subscribed Threads, checking New Posts in specific forums, etc.) so that we don't miss things. I think quite a few of us would pay for an app like that.

There are many apps out there that are junk and I hope we can share some ideas on what some quality games/apps are. I check everyday for new apps hoping to find that next app to keep me busy during a delay! Below are a few of my favorites:
1) Photo Hunter - my favorite puzzle game finding differences on pictures
2) Enigmo - similar to lemmings if you remember that, but uses water droplets
3) VoiceNotes - store thoughts you may randomly come up with while flying
4) Pandora - live music streaming if you are online

Yes I know that I can't use the App store. That's why I'm looking for an URL to the source. Since this is Google we are talking about, I would expect them to have it out there somewhere. I'm looking, but I haven't found it yet.

They'd have to actually go out and create an Installer repository in order for you to get it that way. It's not just a simple download URL - they have to set up some other magic bits to get it into Installer.
(And, it wouldn't suprise me at all if Apple's developer agreement only allowed them to distribute through the App Store)

Are you sure? I've installed several other applications that were not normally in Installer, simply by telling Installer the source URL. Fring is one example. What is the "Installer Repository"?
Installer is a package manager. It contains pointers to where pre-made packages of software are located. A collection of those packages is called a repository. You were able to install Fring because Fring created an Installer repository for 1.x users.
If Google doesn't publish a repository, here's what's involved:
1) Someone's got to get the application files (and bear in mind that 1.x apps don't migrate neatly to 2.x, so the same may be the case going backwards)
2) They've got to create a package in Installer.app format.
3) They've got to get it added to a repo.
And, bear in mind that someone other than Google who does step 1 is most likely violating Google's license agreements.
Just out of curiousity, why aren't you running 2.x? If you've got a 1G iPhone, it can still be jailbroken and SIM-unlocked, the App Store kill switch can be neutered, etc.
stimpy

I would need to double check to make sure all my apps will work on 2.0 (Fring, BiteSMS, etc). And I didn't know there was an App Store kill switch? I am very happy with my Iphone as it is. I don't really see any over-riding need to upgrade. The Safari browser isn't any better in 2.0. Maybe if they get Flash and Java working well in a future release I might switch.
I'll look into it. What is a good tool for upgrading? Does Ziphone do it all for 2.0?

some of the jailbreak apps now exist on the apps store and most of the rest have updated for 2.x firmware. you'll probably find that not only have the apps you use been updated, but there are now several apps that do the same or similar things. for instance, for voip, there is fring, truphone and pennytel.
I'll look into it. What is a good tool for upgrading? Does Ziphone do it all for 2.0?
pwnage. download the iphone 2.1 firmware and run pwnage on it to generate an unlocked and/or jailbroken firmware image, and then flash the ipod in itunes. it's easy and much, much safer than using ziphone.

Does Ziphone do it all for 2.0?
I'd recommend staying away from ZiPhone - PwnageTool and QuickPwn are more robust solutions. See:
Basically, ZiPhone's techniques are more fragile, while the Pwnage methods basically leverage Apple's own firmware flashing methods - short of hardware changes (which have slowed the process for jailbreaking the new version of the iPod Touch), Apple can't stop jailbreak of current iPhone hardware.
In you case, since you haven't upgraded to 2.1 yet, PwnageTool is the one you want to use. As pdxer said, here's the basic process to follow:
1) Have iTunes download the 2.1 firmware (but don't install it)
2) Exit iTunes, open PwnageTool, and follow the prompts to create a modified firmware
3) Flash the new firmware as directed by the tool.
Agreed! I was even looking a *famous* restaurant in Brentwood on Google Earth.

Google voice search on iPhone confused by Aussie accents (http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,25642,24679292-5014239,00.html)
Users down under have noticed searches for the word "iPhone" can return pages of results for "priceline", "mustang" or simply a message saying "try again."

Edge Browser (free full-screen browser)
Edge is really promising in particular, because it allows full screen browsing. the only problem is that you cna only set it to open one URL. there's no way to open the address bar from within the browser. If they add that functionality, it'll be the only browser I use on iPhone. Currently I use Edge for Flyertalk, because the Flyertalk forums are so easily navigable from within the site and it's the site I do the most reading and scrolling on.

Does this actually work? I have been having lots of apps crashing on me as of late and I usually have to restart the phone every couple days to make it hold off. I know it is the OS and not the app since even some of Apples apps keep crashing ( :td::td: to Safari)
It's worked for me so far. It gives you a ~20MB increase in available runtime memory by closing up unused apps that didn't release their memory.

there are a lot of apps that crash, including ones from apple. nothing is perfect. safari has gotten better but it still crashes on occasion, mainly due to it being fed nonstandard html.

Trailguru - records your travel path including time stopped vs. moving, distance, speed, and elevation change, and lets you draw your tracks on a Google map. As its name implies, it was originally geared to hikers, but works perfectly well for cycling, jogging, or just driving around town.
Air Sharing - makes it easy to transfer files, and lets me store and read PDFs of things like train schedules without having to go online.
For the jailbroken:
PDAnet - allows you to tether a laptop via an ad-hoc wireless network or the USB cable (the latter requires some software be installed on the laptop).
SBSettings - quick access to phone settings; just swiping your finger across the top of the screen lets you turn on/off 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, and so on; adjust brightness, or restart; and see your IP address, free disk space, etc. Faster access than BossPrefs, although unlike the latter you cannot shut off push to individual e-mail accounts.

Safari is problematic. I have found that holding the Home button down forces a hard close. Makes sure it doesn't continue hogging memory. I have found if I do that occasionally, it never seems to crash.

I guess it doesn't. But it is quicker then having to load a web page and then enter the flight details. Its got a nice user friendly interface. Anyway it wasn't expensive.
Does flight stats give you Airport info? I haven't used flight stats that much. eg; Flights due to land between 2pm-5pm. So you can see how much delay there is at a certain airport?

Yes, it does have airport info. It feeds into both their own records and anything issued by the FAA. It will even give you a tiny little map if you want it.

Just downloaded a new game that's a lot of fun (and airplane related). It's called FlightControl and it's 99cents. It reminds of an old shareware game from years ago called ATC.
In this game you have to safely guide airplanes (large and small/slow and fast) and choppers to the appropriate runways. It's not a complicated game, but it's a great way to waste some time.

When I ran Cydia a few days ago, it told me there was a new update for Cydia itself, and a substrate layer that is important for Skype. So I loaded it, then loaded Skype from the App Store and all is working super.
I am at the beach in northeast Italy now, and I just used iPhone Skype to call someone in California over the free wifi they have in Jesolo. Crystal clear sound on both ends. ^^^

Just to be clear, since there have been questions, I have an old first gen iPhone, unlocked and jailbroken, running version 2.2. When I ran Cydia earlier this week, it prompted me to load the updates necessary to use Skype.
If you still can't get it to work after loading the necessary update from Cydia, try doing a full reboot of your phone, then run Skype before loading any other app. If that doesn't work, try removing apps until it does work.

One more Skype post, then I'll try to stop. Really.
When you use the Skype phone, there is a contacts button which brings up all your iPhone contacts. So you can use that to call any of your normal telephone contacts with Skype-Out. So, without having to dial the number, I just placed a Skype-Out call to a colleague in Ireland on his GSM phone. Again, excellent quality on both ends. Not as good as Skype-to-Skype, but the limiting factor was his GSM codec. :D

I just got 76 last night. It had been at 67 for a while. My strategy is to create several different paths for the different types of planes to try and make sure they don't run into each other. This would be similar to what ATCers do in real life. Of course it helps here that you can get planes to almost land on top of each other without crashing and that you can fly other types of aircraft right over planes landing on other runways.

Without having any clue how I did it (I was very surprised when I saw the score!), got 85 a few days ago (and 81 yesterday).
Mostly, though, scores are in the 40s-60s
The score depends hugely on how much alternation there is between airports/aircraft type. When a bunch of big/fast planes come at virtually at once headed for the main airport a collision is coming soon ;)
ETA: WOW! I just scored 104! I think I'll quit.

I have 8 of the top 15 free apps and zero of the top paid apps. I use only one or two of those 8 regularly (Facebook and Shazam). Seems like most of them have been around since the Phone originally came out. It would be interesting for a list of top apps that you can sort by week or month (I don't think this exists as opposed to the hourly one on the side bar).
Hopefully the next billion will bring about some new favorites.

Doesn't seem to handle time zones to cleverly (or I'm doing something wrong).
I had a panic the other day when it showed my hotel stay and car rental starting a day after I'd arrived in the US. This was when I was using UK time. Once I'd arrived in the US and changed the timezone to PST, the dates corrected themselves.

Another odd thing on timezones is that UK shows BST, East Coast USA shows EDT - fine - but China shows GMT+8 instead of CST.
More importantly TripIt also loses my itineraries when I'm out of network coverage (even though they say they fixed this). This makes it unusable for me, but I'll leave it installed hoping for an update.

Well there were a bunch of articles last week on some of the tech blogs that mentioned that SlingMedia had updated their page saying they were in contact with people at Apple and that it was still in the process of getting approved, though that it was on the way. One can only speculate what is holding it up.
Personally, my guess is that it comes down to tiffs about whether or not it will support steaming over 3G/EDGE. There are plenty of other apps, including the Masters app that did live streaming so there is a precedent for them approving it, and of course Sling already has apps for other phones though ATT does not really have a say in that case as they have no control over the distribution channels.

My highs are 108 for the regular and 102 for the tropical. I can't get the aircraft carrier to work out I keep crashing early early. The problem is the planes all have to come in so close to each other and their paths are constantly crossing.
Another really neat feature is the fast forward button in the new version which lets you go at about 2x speed. I usually have it on for about the first 20 or 30 just to make things go a little faster.

Ok, so I'm getting an Iphone delivered to me when available. I need an app that will allow me to edit excel files.
I also need to get a pair of headphones with a intergrated mic for under 150.00. I will investigate the custom molded earphones, however I fear they will cost more than 150.00. I currently have a pair made by denon which were around $50, which are pretty good. I've used shure headphones, but I've had problems with the fit after trying all the tips.
Thanks all in advance...

LiveATC.net is now available in the iTunes app store for $2.99. Good selection of Air Traffic Control from airports around the world. It seems to be working well on wifi, but I haven't played with it much on 3G. The reviews are mainly 5 stars.
It doesn't have all the airports yet; if you want to check if your local airport is included, I'd be happy to check for you.

I'm getting a new iPhone on Friday. It's replacing my beloved Palm Treo 650. I have two programs on the Treo that I would love to have on my iPhone: Diet and Exercise Assistant and Expense Plus. I've looked at the iTunes store for apps and can't seem to find anything near the quality of these two.
Diet and Exercise Assistant tracks calories (and carbs, fats, protein, etc) for food and calories for exercise. It calculates your basic metabolic rate and then figures your caloric intake for your hoped for weight loss. You can add foods and exercise. What I really like about it is that it is not web based, so I don't have to go on line.
Expense Plus is a business expense tracker which syncs with Excel to produce expense reports. The expense trackers I've seen in the Apps store seem to email reports. I suppose I could just use an excel spreadsheet when/if DataViz comes out with Docs to go.
Anyway, I'd appreciate suggestions for substitutes for these apps.

Try iExpenseit for the expense report. I literally just finished exporting my first expense report with it and checked on FT to see what was happening. It has some nice features like being able to attach receipt photos to your expense. You can email your report to yourself as a CSV file which can be imported into Excel. The only thing I dont like about it is that it doesnt seem to have a place to note that an expense has been submitted or reimbursed.

Are you paying full price for the S? If you have a 3G phone, AT&T changed their upgrade terms, so you might want to check it. They changed mine from January 2010 to July 2009.

No, I had a family plan > $100 that includes a mother-in-law who will never upgrade her phone, so I stole her upgrade. However, I may be able to simply change that when I pick the phone up on Friday, since they changed the terms so I could personally upgrade as of Friday (instead of July 12).
BTW, I just downloaded Documents to Go and it renders PDFs and Word docs beautifully and the desktop application allows for an easy wireless sync between iPhone and a desktop "shared" folder. I haven't tried editing or anything yet, but I'm guessing it will work fine.
I guess Excel editing will be a free upgrade later.

Thanks RichMSN for the Doc2Go note. I think I may download it this week.
I just installed 3.0. The entire process took less than 30 mins I want to say. It downloaded at about 4.0Mbit/s on my connection. The install took longer than the download.
First thing I tried was copy paste. I had a hex key for a wifi router that I had been waiting to add for the past few days just to see if Copy/Paste lived up to the hype. Needless to say it did and it was quite easy and quick. This is certainly a feature that I will be glad to have even if I only use it on occasion. Double click on any text to highlight it and bring up the copy/paste menu (Or push and hold text in Safari [it even keeps the formatting and images if you want to copy Web pages to an email]). Then double click in a text field to bring up the menu again to paste.
The new Stocks apps is great too. I wish they would add more info and refine the weather one now too.
Voice memos works as advertised.
Another nice feature that I forgot they added was the ability to sync notes. ^
I really like how they now show the length of calls in the phone app. ^^
I don't have any apps I use that have notifications set up yet so hopefully some will be updated (AIM) and others will be recommended and they come in.
A very worthwhile update.

The aircraft carrier one is impossibly hard. Everything crosses each others paths and everything lands so close together. I think my high score on it is 15 and I consider myself at least decent at the other two levels (108/106 high, respectively). It's just too frustrating to even try.

Eh, I used to have Verizon. Not everyone loves them.
Minus: Another device to be charged. And reviews mention that while charging you can't turn it off and get dinged for data transfer (I don't know if this is true, however).
I wouldn't need to share my connection. Perhaps if it was more than 5GB for $60/month (same price as the USB option with AT&T) or if I needed to share my connection I'd see this as great. I don't, though. I'd like something simple.

Sending SMS: No longer are you locked on the screen while it sends. The sending status bar gets pushed to the top and you are free to go back and send other messages at the same time. i picked up my iPhone yesterday. Wow! It is simply stunning.
On the other hand, I didn't think there would be much demand here in Memphis. Boy was I wrong. I stood in line OUTSIDE for 45 minutes waiting to get into the store. It was 96 degrees and the usual unbelievably high Memphis humidity. They did pass around bottles of water. Anyone wanting to go into the store had to wait in line outside. I think Apple could learn some lessons from Disney. I wish they had given us numbers and let us browse. I would have bought a bunch of accessories, I'm sure. Anyone have any push apps that are worthwhile or multiplayer games? The big one I am waiting for would be AIM.
AIM finally updated to support push notifications (beejive, a multiclient IM app also updated, though I haven't bought it).
It works just as advertised and quite well at that. This was my first go at push apps and I was impressed with the speed of the notifications. It really did push it to my phone.
My only gripe for the app is that when you sign off on your computer and you are still on in the background on your phone it does not come up as mobile or any other notification for other users that you are not at a computer and may not respond as quickly or as thoroughly.

In addition to unblock me. I added blackjack, lfreecell, Sol Free, Hangman and word search, all free, and word wrap for 99 cents. All help pass time.
Blackjack is a decent version and has hints available to help you learn to play. Free Cell is a new addition and I've only started one game. Sol Free has several solitaire games and uses touch not drag for moves - much better IMHO. Hangman has lots of levels ranging from easy to very hard -- it is addicting. Word Search is well done but for me not worth the effort. Word wrap lets you make words from a group of letters. You can operate in timed or untimed mode. It too is addicting.
problem with all this is that my wife won't let me use the phone anymore. She keeps saying "but it's my phone." The phone yes -- but not my games!!!!
I still love my Blackberry for email. But the iPhone GS is pretty awesome. On wifi its speed is amazing. Get Speed Test to check your speed.

Ok. I tried out the 2-player mode in Flight Control yesterday. Overall it is pretty fun and a nice change from the normal game play. If you have a friend nearby who also likes the game i recommend that you give it a try at the very least.
A few things to note:
The game works by having two maps that are connected to each other either off of the left or right hand side of the screen. One player lands the pink planes the other lands the yellow planes and the helicopters. When a plane that is not your comes on to your screen you have to direct it off to the shared side of the map. When you send a plane off the edge it shows up pretty much unannounced, unless you say something, on the connecting edge of your friends screen. When I played the other day this was where almost every crash was happening even with our strategy of sending certain planes high and others low.
You play whatever map you have selected on the home screen when you go into the multiplayer menu. Meaning one person can be on the aircraft carrier and another can be on the original, for example.
It took sometimes almost 30 seconds for the phone to recognize that the other phone was trying to connect to start a session.
Again a fun improvement to my favorite game right now on the iPhone.

I am not sure when it resets. I have had a game or two where I surrendered without finding all of the words without the score resetting. When learning I had some resets. Hope I can get to 100,000 without starting over.

I love the DirectV app. When I'm away, it's great being able to now record a TV show via my iPhone with this app.

And why?
Mine is the FlightTracker Pro with Trippit, but it seems like it could do more.

Welcome to FT!!
I have to say I have not found a travel app that I particularly care for or think is worth paying for. For flight stats, nothing beats just going to the carriers mobile Web site or mobile.flightstats.com. They have all the info I need, it is quick, looks good enough and it is by far the most up-to-day and accurate.
I have to say though something that I think would be quite cool on the iPhone would be the KVS tool or something similarly powerful to look up fares and seat maps etc.

If only the dev didn't have to be done on a Mac I'd be almost done with that.

I have to say Flight Control is still my favorite game on the iPhone you just get drawn into it whenever you play and its great for passing the time while traveling.
Anyways, I broke 100 on the aircraft carrier level. This is my new favorite level. It really is a lot of fun and it took me several tries though once I finally got decent at it I realized it rotates around as you go :) adds a little bit more to the game.
Also OS3.0.1 is out and fixes a SMS vulnerability that was recently outed. Hopefully it also fixes some other problems I have been having with the phone in general.

Well, it isn't iPhone specific (and I'm actually not at all sure how it will render on an iPhone since I don't have one to test with) but you can check out my latest little side project here (http://tools.wanderingaramean.com). It might meet your needs in terms of fare look-ups. Seat maps and some other tools are still in progress, but coming along nicely. It is very much still in testing and I'm looking for a few willing folks to beat on it in exchange for a free premium membership. PM me if you're interested.

I made it to 219 on the aircraft carrier level.
It's not a game but another app I like is "Around Me." It shows you where the closest restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc, are located. It's free.
