I was getting a quote for a rental at YVR and saw a $99.00 Premium Location Charge on a 7 day rental. What is that?
If I take a taxi to an off airport location I avoid that charge and all other airport charges.
Hertz is still more expensive than Avis, Thrifty, and Budget both on and off airport. Probably because I don't have a good discount code. I only have the UA code.

Try the thread at the top of this forum called "a few good coupon codes" - that will probably help the rental.
Rent off airport...
Try pricelining the car...
If any of that doesn't work it sounds like you shouldn't rent from hertz.

Hi
A 'premium location surcharge' or 'location surcharge' is to cover the cost of the higher running costs for these types of locations. So we do have to recoup these costs.
Airport, Railway Stations and locations in maojor downtowns normally apply this additional cost.
To give you an example:
Airport authorities in the UK take 20% of the locations revenue for the privelage of being on airport
UK Major downtowns such as London pay 3 times the amount of rent for the privelage of a central location.
Most major car rental companies charge these fees in locations like the above, some build it into the daily rate, others like Hertz show it as a seperate charge so that the consumer can see it is an airport tax or local authority tax rather than a Hertz fee, we just colledt it on behalf of the authorities.
Hope this makes it clearer? :)

Booked Thrifty off airport location. Much cheaper than Hertz on or off airport. I even tried some of the coupon codes and Thrifty regular rates beat them by a mile.

The local airport authority's surcharge on car rentals. About 13% applied to all rental charges including other taxes and fees. Easily circumvented by renting off airport area (e.g., downtown Vancouver). Cab ride there is $35 max.

You are lucky. I've been looking into Thrifty for local rentals and they have generally been exorbitant for me.
