I am not quite sure if this is the best place to post this question. I will be renting a Hertz car in LAS soon and I was wondering which type of credit card offers the best accident coverage... VISA, MC or American Express.
I talked to my insurance agent and he said not to pay the extra for the accident insurance (@$22.00 per day) I will be driving alone and those LAS drivers are crazy.
Any suggestions.

It's not really the type of card, it's the card you have.

You need to call your issuing banks (and Amex) and ask them what kind of coverage they provide for rental cars. Any advice you get here will be too generic to help

For example I have to MasterCards. One from USAA provides great coverage. One from Chase is pretty bad!

Each card has different coverages as the previous poster mentioned. If none of your cards offers PRIMARY coverage, you can choose AMEX's rental car coverage which is somewhere around $24.95 per rental period (regardless of how long it is). It's easy to sign up and is automatic as long as you charge your rental to your enrolled AMEX.

Remember, most cards offer rental coverage, but most are secondary coverage which only picks up after all other insurance is exhausted.

Answered in the other thread, but in case people don't see that one.

I use the Amex coverage. it's either $20 or $25 per rental (not per day) depending on the level of coverage you select.

It's primary coverage, no deductable, etc.

I have auto insurance, but to me the money is well spent not to have to deal with them first, then another insurance. And since I carry a fairly high deductible on my personal insurance, not having any, well that's a good thing.

Just signed up for the AMEX coverage, I was not aware that this service was available. It is a great deal and will give me peace of mind!!

Just be aware that Amex Premium car rental insurance most likely will not cover loss of use and administrative fees Hertz may charge for any accidents.

/got bitten by that before.

One of the great things I learned on Flyertalk, I believe in the Avis forum.

Just remember Hertz has a duty to prove that the loss of use fees are justified. They must prove that the vehicle would have been rented by a paying customer during the period the vehicle is being repaired. If they cannot or will not prove this, you have a right to contest/refuse to pay it. Most insurance companies refuse to pay these charges too because the rental car companies rarely are able to justify these costs.

Of course your insurance agent said not to take it. Even though it would be in his best interest to have you take it (why would he want his office to pay a claim on a car a customer doesn't even own?), it would undermine his insurance that he is selling you.
