Hertz - Why is SMF so expensive?
I usually rent cars on the weekend using the #205418 Southwest Airlines promotion code and with the additional $15 off in the past two years have gotten midsize cars in BWI for $25 a day and in SJC for $18 day. I know that regular day rentals are expensive but I wasn't prepared for a $51.60 a day rate on a midsize car plus taxes for July 27-July 30. Out of curiousity, I put in July 31-Aug 4 to see what a weekend rental was with the same code and it's higher---$61.26 a day plus taxes. What's going on in Sacramento?

Could be Hot August Nights (http://www.hotaugustnights.net/) in Reno, and travelers combining some touring with that. That brings quite a crowd up there.

Well, I checked with Avis, Hertz and Budget all using their USAA discount codes and Avis and Hertz gave me the same rate of $165 total with all taxes, Budget $157. I'm assuming that Hertz in Sacramento is competent and easy to deal with.

I also noticed that car rental rates in SMF, PDX and SEA are very high lately.:(

You can add DCA to that list ... weekend day rates using UA discount code (CDP) ... for a full-size (F) have gone from $22-23 to $31-34 ... and next month I found only $50+!

I have noticed with Hertz LAS that until about within 10-14days they have pretty high rates and then they come down. Even A class for a weekend in August is like 32 a day, whereas it is like $16/day if I look at this weekend. I would book and hold something now and then just check the Thursday/Friday before that sunday you get there and see what the rates are.
You can also try priceline. I have got some screaming deals out of SNA with priceline, like $9/day.
