I am a big united flyer and was looking for upgrades on a recent flight from Delta to Johanasberg. Any adive or thoughts??

You can only get an upgrade from SAA (no way to use DL miles to upgrade, much less UA). The chances of an operational upgrade are slim. Voyager members will get first dibs (presumably you are not a member, otherwise you'd have called it Johannesburg). Maybe going the Star way is better for you (LH through FRA).
