What is the best website to buy roung trip tickets SIN - KUL? What's the cheapest way to fly this route? How much are the tickets usually? I am trying to determine if it may be worth to pay the $150 change fee to extend one more leg on the current United award reservation. This is for July 18 and return July 29.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

There are several trains per day on this route, taking about six and a half hours and costing $25 SIN-KUL and $10 KUL-SIN (tickets are cheaper when bought/originating in Malaysia); the trains are comfortable and comparable to European standards, and likely to be a lot more pleasant than dealing with the LCCs on this route. The Malaysian railways website http://www.ktmb.com.my has train times and booking on this route. (Note that Kuala Lampur is listed under "Sentral", and that buying two oneway tickets will be cheaper than a roundtrip.) Buses are slightly faster, but probably more expensive.
If you really want to fly, Jetstar Asia, Air Asia and Tiger Airways are LCCs which serve this route. The cheapest I can find for your dates is about $108 on Tiger Airways, but you may be able to get that down significantly if you can be a bit more flexible with your dates. Note that of course the majority of the cost of such flights is in "taxes and fees"; also the Low Cost Carrier Terminal at KUL is a long way (20km by road, since it's on the opposite side of the runway) from the main terminal.

I think it would cost more than $150 to fly this route r/t, though I did manage to buy a SIN-KUL o/w on Malaysia during their sale when everything was $0++. :) It would likely be around $150 in the extremely unlikely event you could get such sale tickets this close to your travel date.
If you vould swing a SQ redemption that might be better, but I don't know how much it will cost with surcharges/taxes - maybe the same as the $75 '$0++' sale tickets.
Have a look in the Other Australia / Asia FFP forum for the MH info.

SIN-KUL is all of 185 miles; wouldn't a train or bus be better?

I do prefer to fly actually :) But this is for my wife and my two kids (11 & 6 yr old). The plan was to go to SIN and her brother would give her a ride to KUL. But something came up and the brohter can not make it, therefore the need to get to KUL on their own. I did some searching from the suggestions here and realized with the fees and taxes there is just no way to get this under $150 round trip. So I left it out to her, you can take the train and spend the rest on herself or fly and spend less on herself...so she is taking the train...I think the ride will be good for the kids, they've been spoiled on flights:) Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

KUL is many miles south of KL; even if they had flown, they'd still have been taking a train, so I agree with the train plan.
We took it overnight, SIN-KL, in 2004 - IIRC, we went first class sleeper and it was _still_ cheap.

I'll be flying into SIN on an NW award soon even though my intended destination is KUL (NW used to fly there but doesn't anymore). Will arrive around 12:50 a.m. & sleep in the airport (probably best airport to sleep in), then take the MRT to Bugis and walk to the Queen St. bus station and take the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur express. The 24-seat VIP buses on that route are really NICE, and the roads are interstate grade. Lots of competition, too; I think other services leave from Lavender bus station. Will get into Puduraya bus station and can take the STAR line in KL straight to the hotel, as luck would have it. Total cost for all of it in US$ is probably about $26, and the bus trip takes around 6.5 hours.

If you want cheaper fares than what come up online and you aren't interested in the ground options or flying the LCC-carriers, try calling the major airlines local city ticketing offices and ask them what they have available.
I often find that SIN-BKK and other regional flights are much cheaper when booked through the downtown ticket offices -- and these are fares that the the airport ticketing staff won't sell and that aren't available online.

It would certainly be cheaper to to just but a ticket with Tiger Airways or Air Asia.
They are both LCC's so pretty similar. I prefer Tiger but not for any good reason. :p
